Sedgwick Dies at Age of 77 Funeral Service Held Monday For Prominent Livestock Feeder and Business Man Charles H. Sedgwick, 77, practically a lifelong resident of Hawarden and a prominent livestock feeder and business man here, died unexpectedly at his home about 6:15 last Thursday evening. Mr. Sedgwick had been in his usual health that day and had been on county business at Orange City and Chatsworth and had even traded for a county truck in the afternoon. A driver accompanied Mr. Sedgwick on his trips of late. He returned home about 4 in the afternoon and at 6 he called to Mrs. Sedgwick informing he was ill. Within 15 minutes he had died. Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon at the First Methodist church in Hawarden with Rev. C. E. Custer officiating. Burial was in Grace Hill cemetery under the direction of the Barnard Funeral home. Regained Eyesight Last spring Mr. Sedgwick lost his eyesight from development of a cataract on one of his eyes. Last May he submitted to an operation for the removal of the cataract and was fitted with glasses. Until then Mr. Sedgwick had been unable to read for almost two years but managed to take care of his official duties as county supervisor. A son of Mr. and Mrs. Tho. J. Sedgwick, pioneers of Hawarden, he was born March 15, 1881, at Akron, then Portlandville, coming to Hawarden at the age of 6. When a mere boy he started on his business career by buying hogs and cattle. He became one of the most prominent livestock feeders and land owners in this vicinity. He was also active in business affairs of the city and was one of the organizers and original stockholders and directors of the Farmers State bank. Later he became vice president of the bank, an office he held at his death. Fireman for 50 Years Always active in community affairs, Mr. Sedgwick was a member of the volunteer fire department here from 1905 to 1955. The last 37 years he served as chief. A staunch republican, he took an active part in politics, serving on republican committees at various times. He served as councilman of the third ward 12 years, from 1920 to 1932, when he resigned to take the office of county supervisor. During his time as councilman, the city light plant was put on a paying basis and the present building housing the plant was built. One of his projects was the tax free city, whereby the earnings from the city plant paid the corporation tax for a number of depression years. Chairman 20 Years Mr. Sedgwick was appointed county supervisor to replace R. W. Younie who died while in office in July of 1932. He continued to serve during the intervening years. His term expires Jan. 1, 1960. He was not a candidate for re-election last fall. He served almost 27 years, the past 20 years, as chairman of the board. At the time Mr. Sedgwick took over the office as supervisor there were no graded or gravel roads in Sioux county. Since that time every farmer has been put on a graveled road and all school bus routes are graveled. Married in 1908 As a young man he was interested in sports, especially baseball, and for three years he played on a salaried team. He was a member of the Methodist Church. He married Miss Anna Cowen of Alcester October 14, 1908, and last October Mr. and Mrs. Sedgwick observed their golden wedding anniversary at open house. Besides the widow, he is survived by a son, Charles, Jr. of Hawarden, three daughters, Mrs. Lois Taggart of Kansas City, Kan. Mrs. Martha Taggart of Springfield, Ill., and Mrs. Helen Akin of Hawarden, and 11 grandchildren. The Sioux County court house was closed for the day and the Farmers State bank for the services Monday which were attended by a number of officials, including Rep. Charles B. Hoeven, Simon Scholten and Mrs. R. Rohre of Alton, Gerrit Brandsma of Rock Valley, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Bosman of Boyden, Peter De Vries of Sioux Center. M. J. Van Wyk, Mr. and Mrs. K. L. Seliger, Mrs. O. G. Reiniger, jr. Dewey Wiersma, Henry Te Paske, Harry Dykstra, Ted Hoogland, Ernest Erickson, Mrs. Leland Kraai, Wm. Boortman, Mrs. Joseph Rexwinkle, George De Jong, Mrs. Alice Van Roekel, Mrs. Phyliss Hendershott, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Jensen, Charles Sterrenberg, Hans Vander Maten, Conrad Aronson and W.K. Price, all of Orange City. Also attending were the following from out of town including a number of engineers: Allen Stopak, Ole Olaff, A. J. Kaveny, Earl Capel, Joseph Hodefer and L. W. Malloy, also Mrs. Ella Hove of Sioux City and Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Thorburn of Norfolk, Neb. Out of town relatives who came for the services included Mrs. Lois Taggart of Kansas City, Kans., Mr. and Mrs. John Taggart of Springfield, Ill., Mrs. and Mrs. Ollie Sedgwick of Huron, S. D., Sidney Sedgwick of Wessington Springs, S. D., Mr. and Mrs. John Gehan of Sioux City, Mr. and Mrs. L. G. Sedgwick of Omaha, Mr. and Mrs. Claude Highsmith of Council Bluffs, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Keffeler of Sturgis, S. D., Mrs. Dale Smith and Jerry of Rapid City, Mrs. George Sedgwick of ElDorodo, Kan., Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Carlson of Alcester and Mrs. Kate Akin and Mrs. Jim Schroeder of Rock Valley. Casket bearers included Karl Seliger, Onno Klave, Clarence Rush, M. J. Van Wyk, Lyle Green and Earl Slife, Sr. Honorary bearers were Guy Venard, E. A.
