Gardner, the daughter of Roscoe and Nellie Kloss Toliver, was born July 10, 1903, in Bristol Township, Greene County. She died Dec. 31, 1994, at the longer term care center of Greene County Medical Center in Jefferson. Helen spent her entire youth in the Churdan area and helped deliver milk from her parents' farm, worked at Kloss's Store and Conant's Café, and played piano for silent movies. She attended and graduated from Churdan High School in 1922. She later attended Cedar Falls Teachers College and taught in Kendrick Township. On Oct. 27, 1923, Helen Toliver was united in marriage to Eugene Gardner at Boone. With Eugene's work with the Milwaukee Railroad, the couple lived in various communities along the railroad, living 13 years in Albert City. In 1951 they returned to Churdan where they made their home. Eugene died in 1971, and Helen continued to live in Churdan until 1983, when she became a resident of the long term care center. Helen Gardner was a member of First Baptist Church in Churdan and a member of the Baptist Ladies Aid Society. Survivors include a sister-in-law, Yvonne Toliver; nieces Joanne Legore, Jeanne Wiederin, Jan Paup, Zatha Blair and Lorada Custer; nephews Ron Toliver, Larry Gardner and Verle Kinyon; and many great-nieces and great-nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, and one brother, Floyd Toliver.
