Description	:	Helen M. Stewart, longtime resident of Mount Vernon, passed away Monday, October 4, 2004 at Mira Vista Nursing Home. She was born in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada on January 16, 1916, daughter of Roy and Julia McAllister Kirby. In 1919 they moved to Geyser, Montana where she attended school. While continuing her education, she worked at Columbus Hospital in Great Falls. She completed her degree and taught in a one-room schoolhouse and was required to live on premise, to have the schoolroom warmed when students arrived. She was born in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada on January 16, 1916, daughter of Roy and Julia McAllister Kirby. In 1919 they moved to Geyser, Montana where she attended school. While continuing her education, she worked at Columbus Hospital in Great Falls. She completed her degree and taught in a one-room schoolhouse and was required to live on premise, to have the schoolroom warmed when students arrived. She was married to Ernie Stewart in Great Falls, Montana in 1938. In 1941 they moved to Mount Vernon with their two eldest daughters, Denise and Diane. The remaining eight children were born in Mount Vernon. When the youngest, Julie, entered first grade, Helen resumed her teaching profession, teaching grade four at Immaculate Conception School. "Mrs. Stewart: was many a fourth grader's favorite teacher. Helen was well known for always having "room for one more" at the dinner table, an unimaginable eat considering there were already 10 siblings around the table! She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, a charter member of St. Margaret's Guild Coterie. When she had time for herself, reading and bridge were her favorite pastimes, along with an occasional boxing match. She is survived by 9 children Denise Vaughan of Seattle, Diane (Jack) Larson of Fir Island, Mary Elaina (Bill) Wittig, of Burlington, Ontario; Gary (Sandy) Stewart of Conway, Fay (Tom) Shane of Mount Vernon, Ed (Keri) Stewart of Maui, Hawaii, Susan (Alan) Williams of Mount Vernon, John (Sue) Stewart of Dallas, Texas, and Julie (Dennis) Lind of Mount Vernon; three brothers, Joe, Tom, and Pat Kirby reside in Montana; 20 grandchildren; Pam Larson Alvord, Ken and Steve Larson, Matt Stewart and Alyssa Stewart Monrad, Christina Shane Waltner, Tom Shane, Angela Toohey, Malia and Mitchell Stewart, Edward John Stewart, Courtney and James Williams, Sarita, Ian, Jamie, Jensin and Riley Stewart, Nicholas and Sheena Lind; seven great-grandchildren, Jason, Erik and Scott Lindeman, Kyle and Cameron Larson, Mari Waltner and Peighton Toohey. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernie, one son Robert, one son-in-law Richard Vaughan, one sister and one brother. Public visitation will be held at Kern Funeral Home on Thursday, October 7th from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm. Private family graveside services will be held at the Mount Vernon Cemetery on Friday, October 8th followed by a public memorial mass held at Immaculate Conception Church at 12:15 pm, with a reception following at St. Joseph Center, 215 N. 15th Street, Mount Vernon. Memorials may be made to Immaculate Conception Regional School, 1321 E. Division Street, Mount Vernon, WA 98273. The family wishes to extend its deepest gratitude to the staff at Mira Vista Care Center for their kind and generous care extended to our Mother during her stay. Arrangements are under the care of Kern Funeral Home, Mount Vernon.
