Baird, Appleton, and Mrs Robert Anderson, Carleton Place: "It was with considerable surprise that the news of Mrs Wm. Stephenson's death came to her friends last Friday morning. The deceased lady; although an invalid for many years, suffering with a heart affection, was in her customary health until ten days ago, when she was taken down with a severe cold – akin to la gripe – but was progressing favourably, when a sudden change took place early on Friday morning, the heart giving out. Mrs Stephenson was born in Ramsay in April, 1832, and thus in her 67th year. She was a daughter of Robert and Catherine McFarlane, who were among the early Scotch pioneer settlers who came out in 1822. She was married to the late Wm. Stephenson whilst he was a resident of Almonte, and very soon afterwards the family removed to Carleton Place. Three daughters blessed the union, one of whom died in childhood. The survivors are Mrs Dr. McIntosh (with whom deceased was residing for the past few weeks) and Miss Jessie. Mrs Stephenson was a lady who was highly esteemed by those who knew her best for her many Christian virtues, but for many years her health has kept her almost entirely confined to her home. She was a member of St. Andrew's church and the services at the funeral on Sunday afternoon, which was very largely attended, were conducted by her pastor, Rev Mr Woodside. The interment was made in the family plot in the 8th line Ramsay cemetery. The sympathy of a large number of friends goes out to the sorrowing daughters in their bereavement."
