Read More	1940, Thursday September 26, The Canadian, Carleton Place page 4 Mrs John McDonald An outstanding and socially prominent resident of this town, widow of Mr John McDonald, passed away on Sunday afternoon at the home of her brother-in-law and sister Dr D. McIntosh and Mrs McIntosh with whom she lived for the past five years, following an illness of nearly three months. The late Mrs McDonald had been in good health until July of this year when she was stricken with a serious illness followed by complications which she could not combat and her condition grew gradually weaker day by day and towards the end of last week she lapsed into unconsciousness and remained in that condition until death claimed her. Born in Almonte, deceased was a daughter of the late William Stephenson, who was a well known railway contractor, and his wife Helen McFarlane, but when a young child she came with her parents to Carleton Place where she spent all of her lifetime. She was one of the town's most highly respected and best known citizens and her passing caused widespread regret to her legion of friends who are made up of people from all walks of life. The late Mrs McDonald was married at the home of her sister, Mrs McIntosh, in Carleton Place, to Mr John McDonald, who operated a wollen mill here and who was a member of a prominent family of this place. Mr McDonald died several years ago. In religion she was a devout and faithful member of Memorial Park United Church and was active in all of its branches, especially the work of the Women's Missionary Society and the Ladies Aid. Mrs McDonald was an accomplished musician and in her early life her services in this respect were greatly in demand. She took an active part in all philanthropic works and her kindness to humanity was an outstanding characteristic of her life. She was deeply interested in the work of the Red Cross, of which she was a life member, and until laid aside through illness, she was active in the work of the local branch and knitted regularly for soldiers in the present conflict just as she did in the Great War of 1914-18. She was also a member of the local branch of the V.O.N. and she contributed generously to all other good works of the town. Mrs McDonald was a lady of culture and refinement, gracious of manner and beloved by all with whom she came in contact. She had an influence for good on those about her and was happiest when she was rendering a service in the cause of humanity. Her daily life exemplified the true principles of Christianity and she leaves behind a deep impression on the whole community which time cannot efface. One sister Mrs D.H. McIntosh survives. The funeral, which was largely attended, took place on Tuesday afternoon from the home of Dr. D.H. McIntosh, Bridge street, to Memorial Park United church where an impressive service was conducted by the minister, Rev D.C. Munro. Interment was made at the Auld Kirk cemetery in Almonte. The pallbearers were Dr W.F. Baird, Messrs J.P. McLaren, Ernest McIntosh, Lorne Garvin, Roland Williams and Dr Tanner of Ottawa. A wealth of beautiful floral tokens were received testifying to the high esteem in which the late Mrs McDonald was held. A number of friends from outside points were present at the funeral.
