Mrs Matthews was a woman greatly esteemed by all who knew her, and her demise created deep sorrow in a large circle of relatives and friends. Born in Pethshire, Scotland, June 20, 1821, she came to Canada over sixty years ago, married and lived in Western Ontario for some years; then came to Bytown (now Ottawa); later moved to Beckwith, then to Goulbourn, and late still (in 1847) to Lanark township, where she lived till twenty-three years ago, since which time she lived the greater part of the time with her eldest son, Mr Jacob Matthews. Her husband was killed at a raising at the late Mr James Matthie’s, Lanark township, thirty-eight years ago. She had nine children as follows: Elizabeth (Mrs Pretty), of Goulbourn, deceased; Jacob, of Ramsay; Mary Ann (Mrs Alex Bowes), of Castleford, deceased; Alexander, in Iowa; Ellen (Mrs Thos J. Dodds), Almonte; Joseph, of Luther, Mich; James and George, of Madison, South Dakota; and Isaac L., of Port Arthur. Four of these children – Mrs Dodds, Messrs I.L., Joseph and Jacob Matthews – were at the funeral on Sunday afternoon, to the eighth line cemetery, Ramsay, the remains having arrived here by te Imperial Limited on Saturday, and were conveyed to the home of Mr Jacob Matthews, Ramsay. There was a large attendance, and the religious services at the house and the grave were conducted by Rev W.T. Riggs, deceased having through her long life been a consistent and devoted member of the Baptist church. Fifty-seven grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren are numbered among her living descendants.
