Read More	1929, Friday June 28, The Almonte Gazette front page Prominent In Life Of The Community Jacob Matthews Who Died on Friday, was Exceptionally Vigorous and Energetic Man The funeral of the late Jacob Matthews took place on Sunday, from the home of his daughter, Mrs W.J. Rae, Ramsay, to the Auld Kirk Cemetery. The services were conducted by Rev Wm Aird of the Baptist Church, and Rev J.M. Rutherford of the Reformed Presbyterian Church. The large gathering of friends at the house, the long line of cars following the remains and the numerous beautiful floral offerings testified to the high regard in which Mr Matthews was held. Mr Matthews was born in Lanark Township in 1847, and spent his boyhood on a farm near Middleville, where, at the age of fifteen, on the death of his father, he was left in charge of the family. In 1870 he was married to Janet Anderson, who predeceased him eight years ago. Shortly after his marriage he moved to a farm in Osgoode Township and later to near Ashton, living there for about sixteen years, serving for several years in the Township Council and making a prominent part in the life of the community. In 1899, he moved to the farm near Almonte, now occupied by his son, Mr A.W. Matthews. For the past eight years. Mr Matthews had travelled considerably, and had spent a part of each year with the different members of his family. It was in February of 1928, on the very day when had intended leaving the home of his oldest son, Dr I.G. Matthews, of Crozier Seminary, Pa, to visit friends in Chicago en route to the home of Dr R.J. Metthews of Clarinda, that he suffered a slight stroke of paralysis. He returned to Almonte and, although able to be up an about, until a few days before his death, he never fully recovered from the effects of this stroke. He passed away on Friday. Mr Matthews was an exceptionally vigorous and energetic man, keenly interested in all public questions. He was of sterling character and made an excellent friend and neighbour. He was a staunch Liberal in politics and a muchesteemed member of the Baptist Church. He leaves to mourn his loss four sons, three daughters and ten grandchildren: Dr I.C. Matthews, of Crozier Seminary, Pa; Dr R.J. Mathews, of Clarinda, Iowa; Jas Matthews, of Winnipeg, and Alton W., of Ramsay, Mrs W.J. Rae, Ramsay; Miss J.E. Matthews of the Almonte High School Staff, and Mrs J.W. Davis of St Catharines, to them the sincere sympathy of the town and district goes out at this time. The pallbearers at the funeral were Messrs Wm Simpson, Wm Thompson, Jack Simpson, Isaac Halpenny, Jack Blair and Wesley Rae.
