Lena was born April 17, 1914, on a farm near Crane, the fifth child and the second daughter of Adolph and Marie (Hansen) Hedegaard. She attended elementary school at the Midway and Savage schools and graduated at the top of her class from Savage High School in 1932. She attended Eastern Montana College as a scholarship student, received her teaching certificate there and taught in Richland County at Breezy Flat, Crane and Midway schools. Lena met her husband, Clifford Corey, in Billings, and they were married June 22, 1938, at the Lutheran Church in Savage. Their first home was on 27th Street in Billings, later on Billings Bench, and in 1945, they purchased a home on Wyoming Avenue, where Lena lived until August, 1994, when she moved to Westpark Village. Their son, Dale L. Corey, was born Feb. 27, 1941. Lena operated a private kindergarten in her home, then taught kindergarten classes at the YMCA from 1956-58. During this time she earned a bachelor of science degree in education and then a masters of science degree in early childhood education. In 1958, she became one of the first two special education teachers at the Montana Center for Handicapped Children, where she taught until her retirement in 1978. She has maintained contact with some of her students throughout her life. In 1964, Lena's husband, Cliff, was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease which became increasingly debilitating until his death in 1980. During that time, Lena maintained her teaching career and cared for Cliff at home. She was also preceded in death by her son, Dale, who died in a plane crash in Billings in December, 1992. Lena was very active in the American Lutheran Church in Billings, the professional sorority Kappa Gamma Delta and the Yellowstone Valley Retired Teachers organization. Following her retirement, she enjoyed traveling in the U.S. and abroad. She enjoyed gardening, walking and working with children. Survivors include her brother and sister-in-law, Marion and Lora Hedegaard of Billings; her daughter-in-law, Sandra Corey of Billings; her granddaughter, Staci (Stan) Robison of Billings; her great-grandson, Christian Robison of Billings; her grandson, Heath (Andrea) Corey and son, Ted of Chandler, Ariz.; her close friend and helper, Mildred Tombre of Billings; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Lena's cheerful personality and her courage during times of extreme tragedy earned her the admiration of all who knew her. She will be missed.
