Mr. Paine, who had been living at the Christian Home in Holdrege for the past sixteen months, died Thursday in a Holdrege hospital, following an illness of only a few days. Hendrick Ellsworth Paine was born 30 September 1866 near Monmouth, in Warren county, Illinois. He moved with his parents in 1869 to Webster county, Iowa and in 1883, the family came to Furnas county. This esteemed citizen was a pioneer school teacher and more than 30 years of his life were spent in the school rooms of the early days in Nebraska and the Dakotas. He was head of Harlan county schools for three years and spent one year at Wood Lake. Mr. Paine came to Edison in 1938 and lived there until he went to the Holdrege home to reside. He was an active gardener, specializing in raising vegetables and flower seedlings. During his residence in Edison he was honored with a recognition service for having served more than 75 years as a Sunday School teacher. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Methodist church in Elwood, with burial in the cemetery there. From the Elwood Bulletin, 23 January 1958 Services Monday for Ellsworth Paine, 91, Early Day Teacher Ellsworth Paine, an early day rural school teacher passed away at a Holdrege care home Friday. His parents' farm was in the old Quakerville community north of the Ray Major farm. A dugout was their first home. Mr. Paine taught in the Homerville district and will be remembered by many former pupils. Obituary Hendric Ellsworth Paine, son of Barton and Rebecca Paine, was born 30 September 1866 in Webster county, Iowa, and passed away, Thursday, 16 January 1956 at the age of 91 years, 3 months and 16 days at Holdrege. He came with his parents to Gosper county when a young man. He spent many years as a school teacher and was active in Sunday school and church work. Most of his later years he spent in Edison gardening and raising flowers. The past year he spent in the Christian Home near Holdredge. Of six brothers and sisters, he is survived by his brother, Festus, of Dunbar, Nebraska, many nices and nephews and a host of friends. Reverend Payton of Hastings and Reverend T.W. Shepard, Elwood, had charge of the service Monday at Elwood Methodist church. Mrs. Byron Ewer was organist and Robert Yost, soloist. Dr Payton was a college classmate of Mr. Paine. Pall bearers were Sam Hesser, Oscar Murdoch, Harry Stoll, E.H. Stoll, Andrew Christensen and Bruce Phillips. Interment was in Elwood cemetery. Ellsworth Paine
