From the Santa Barbara News Press: March 24, 1957 Mrs. Effie Major Mrs. Effie Paine Major, 87, died Friday at the home of a daughter, Ruth Major, 130 Arboleda Rd. She had been ill for three weeks. Mrs. Major was born Feb. 24, 1870, at Dayton, Ia., a duaghter of Barton W. and Rebecca Paine. Her husband, the late James A. Major, died in Chapel, Neb., in 1928 and she moved from Edison, Neb., to Santa Barbara in 1947. The deceased was a member of the Methodist Church. Surviving besides her daughter here are three sons, Leslie Major, Riverton, Wyo,; Walter Major, Richland, Wash., and Ralph Major, Washington, D.C.; two daughers, Mrs. D.L. Burke, Trinidad, Colo, and Mrs. E.S. Burke, Lincoln, Neb; two brothers, Elsworth Paine, Holdredge, Neb. and Festus Paine, Dunbar, Nebraska; 24 grandchildren and 47 great-grandchildren. Welch and Ryce Mortuary made arrangements here for services which will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Elwood, Neb., under direction of the Clark Funeral Home. Interment will be beside her husband in Elwood Cemetery. From the Oxford Standard, Thursday, 4 April 1957, page 7, column 1 Edison and Vicinity Mrs. Effie Major Passes Away Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon of last week at Elwood for Mrs. Effie Major who passed away March 23rd in California where she lived with her daughter Ruth. Mrs. Major lived here with her brother, H.E. Paine, leaving several years ago to go to California. Effie Ann Paine was born to the union of Mr. and Mrs. Barton W. Paine on 24 February 18700, near Dayton, Ohio and passed away at the home of her daughter, Ruth, on 22 March 1957 at the age of 87 years, and 26 days. Her early childhood was spent in Webster county, Iowa. At the age of 13 she came with her family by covered wagon to Furnas county, Nebraska and subsequently homesteaded in Gosper county. In 1891 she was united in marriage to James Andrew Major. To this union were born nine children, Ethel Thomas (deceased), Leslie, Riverton, Wyoming, Walter, Richland, Washington, Edith Burke, Trinidad, Colorado, Gladys Burke, Lincoln, Nebraska, Ralph, Washington D.C., Ruth, Santa Barbara, California, Ernest (deceased) and Helen Smail (deceased). Her husband died in 1938. In addition to her immediate family she leaves two brothers, Ellsworth of Holdrege and Festus of Dunbar, 24 grandchildren, 47 greatgrandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. Her body was sent to the Clark Funeral Home in Elwood and she is buried in Nebraska. The Reverend T.W. Shepard of the Methodist Church officiated at rites on Tuesday pm. All her living children, a son in law, daughter in law and her brother Ellsworth attended the services. I didn't go, we were living in Vermillion, South Dakota when she died. I was one of the 47 great grandchildren. Music for the service was by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Yost and Mrs. D Grassmeyer accompanied by Mrs. Byron Ewer at the organ. Pall bearers were Bruce Philips, Clarence Coy, Robert Birt, Ray Major, Rawleigh Major and James Major.
