Read More	Barton Ward Paine Barton Ward Paine was born 27 January 1843 at Leroy, near Painesville, Ohio. He died 21 May 1915, age 72 years, 3 months and 24 days. When he was twelve years old he moved with his parents to Warren county, Illinois. There he was raised. When the country called for volunteers to support the union he offered his services. On the 6th day of May 1864, he enlisted at Monmouth, Illinois and on the 21st day of June was mustered into the service of his country as a private in Company A, 138th Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry. After having served about double the time of hundred day enlistment he was honorably discharged. He again attempted to enlist, but was rejected. 15 March 1865, he married Rebecca Jane Chapman. Eight children, four sons and four daughters were born to this union. One son died in infancy and one daughter in the prime of womanhood. The wife and mother passed on before the husband and father on 11 April 1897. The life of this man was that of a struggling pionner. HIs boyhood was spent on what was then the frontier of Ohio. HIs young manhood subdued much of the sod in the great prairie of Illinois. In his early married life he moved with his wife and two children to the fertile plains of Webster county, Iowa. While there on the farm, two miles north of the town of Dayton he passed through the greatest struggles of his life. It was there that the family increased to its full size. The mother's health failed. It was decided that for the sake of her health and a possibility of gaining a home the family must move farther west. In the fall of 1883 the mother and seven children, ranging in age from two years to the middle of the teens, were gathered into a wagon and started for the land of free homes. They settled on a homestead in Gosper county, Nebraska, shortly before the railroad was build through the northern part of the county. The town of Elwood on the west and Smithfield on the east of the homestead marks the place where the whole family grew to manhood and womanhood. Funeral services were conducted at the home during the afternoon of May 22nd by the Reverend Thurman A. Smith of Valentine. After the service, the remains were taken to Wood Lake and shipped to Smithfield, Nebraska. Funeral services were conducted by the Reverend Paxton in the Methodist Episcopal Church in Smithfield on April 25th. The house was crowded by many of the old settlers whocame to pay their respects to one of their lessoning number who was just passing on to another new home. After the services the remains were followed by a procession of many friends and relatives to the Elwood cemetery and there laid to rest in the same graveyard where during corn-planting time thirty-one years ago, Barton Ward Paine assisted in digging the first grave in the yard. The loss of the deceased is felt by an only sister, Mrs. F.M. Scott of Oxford, and his children, three sons and three daughters, H.E. Paine of Wood Lake, S.E. Paine of Loveland, Colorado, F.A. Paine of Plainview, Mrs. J.A. Major of Smithfield, Mrs. F. Pettijohn of Beaver Crossing and Mrs. C.A. Trunnel of Oxford. All but the son in Colorado were present at the funeral. - Wood Lake Stockman
