Her early life was spent in Indiana and Illinois and at about 16 years of age she moved with her family to Nebraska where she resided until her marriage at Ord, Nebraska, Aug 22, 1882 to John Davidson Braden. Her early life was spent in Indiana and Illinois and at about 16 years of age she moved with her family to Nebraska where she resided until her marriage at Ord, Nebraska, Aug 22, 1882 to John Davidson Braden. To this union five children were born, one of whom, Francis Leola, died in infancy. Mr. Braden preceded his wife in death, having passed away in Valentine, Nebraska, October 25, 1922. The Braden family moved to South Dakota in the early homesteading days, where they had since made their home. Mrs. Braden was the daughter of a Civil War Veteran and was a volunteer in the library work in Tripp County. She first had a circulating branch of the Tripp County Library from Pierre, and then a branch of the Tripp County Library was established in her home. She was a faithful and helpful librarian for 16 years and always was glad to help choose worthwhile reading material and everyone was made to feel welcome at any time and come and enjoy the Library. Before her health began to fail, Mrs. Retta Braden, as she was known to friends, was a sincere and conscientious leader in the Sunday School work in the Keyapaha community, serving as superintendent of the Sunday School for many years. She was a devoted member of the Baptist Church there. A few years before too ill to travel, she spent a beautiful year with her two sons, Arthur and Robert, on the west coast. She had often spoken to friends of the pleasure of her trip and her keen enjoyment of the time she spent with them and their families. Since her return, her health failed steadily through the years, and she was lovingly and faithfully cared for by her daughter, Elizabeth and son Walter, until her death. Her children feel that the splendid character of their mother has truly been an inspiration and guide to them.
