Hammerstrom, slept peacefully into that eternal rest at his home here at 2:30 pm, Monday afternoon, December 28, 1959, as a result of a heart attack. He attained the age of 87 years, 1 month, and 12 days. In spite of his years, Mr. Hammerstrom was in fairly good health, was about town every day and enjoyed visiting with friends. Monday morning he removed some of the snow from his sidewalk and then made a trip uptown. At two o'clock in the afternoon he was again seen shoveling snow and apparently went into the house to rest. Obert Nelson, who stayed with Mr. Hammerstrom, went into the house a short time later and seeing Mr. Hammerstrom sitting in his rocking chair, spoke to him. When he did not answer, Mr. Nelson investigated and discovered that the elderly gentleman had passed away. Henry C. Hammerstrom was born near Orion, IL on June 1, 1873, son of Mr and Mrs. Charles A. Hammerstrom. There he attended school and grew to manhood, and for time assisted his parents with farming operations. On January 3, 1900 he was united in marriage with Lydia Lundgren, and three sons were born to this union. For ten years the couple continued to farm near Orion, IL and then on March 1, 1910 came to this community, the family first locating on a farm 11 miles southeast of Lennox. After a short time there, they moved onto a farm seven miles southwest of town. Retiring in 1925, he and his wife took up their residence in Lennox and here he has made his home for nearly 35 years. For a number of years Mr. Hammerstrom was a mail carrier between the Great Northern and Milwaukee depots and the post office, as well as custodian at the Lutheran Church. He was a member of the First English Lutheran Church for over 45 years. He was preceded in death by his wife who passed away on December 1, 1955 and thus came to a close a marriage partnership of over 55 years. Deceased is survived by three sons, Clarence of near Davis, Lester of near Chancellor, and Edward of Canton; 14 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
