Read More	Sisters Die Twenty-nine Hours Apart…Miss Mahala Schroeder passes Friday Evening and Mrs. Beckman Is Called Sunday Throngs of people and scores of friends paid their last tribute of respect to two of Emmetsburg’s most worthy women, Mrs. Henry Beckman and Miss Mahala Schroeder, on Christmas day and the day following. These ladies were sisters and during their entire lives they lived close together in thought and companionship, and it seemed to be a fitting thing that together they should journey on to another and a better world. Mrs. Beckman had not been well for several years. For many weeks her condition was such that her family and friends feared that the end might come at any moment. Miss Schroeder had not been as well as usual, but was anxiously doing everything in her power to assist in caring for her sister. During the week her strength failed and those about her insisted that she go to bed and accept the care and attention which she needed. This she did, though her constant worry was her sister’s condition. At about 6 o clock Friday evening the nurse took some food to her. Even then she asked that all attention be given to Mrs. Beckman, saying she was alright. The nurse closed the door of her room and went down stairs hoping that she would rest. At about 7 o clock her brother, Chris Schroeder, came to the house and went upstairs to see her. He found her lying very quietly and thought she was sleeping. He went out of the room and told the nurse that she, Mahala, was asleep. The nurse in doubt about this and went to her and found that she was dead. The soul had silently taken it’s flight, and the anxious and unselfish woman had preceded her sister in death. Mrs. Beckman had been in a state of coma during the day. She was then unconscious and, though she lived until 1:15 Sunday morning, she did not regain consciousness and passed on without knowing of her sister’s death. The funeral service for the two was held at the Beckman home at 2 o clock Tuesday afternoon. Their pastor, Rev. W. D. Kline, assisted by Rev. M.L. Sunderlin and Rev. J.E. Brereton, conducted the service. Miss Mahala Schroeder was born at Garnavillo, Clayton county, March 11, 1853. She came to Emmetsburg with her parents in 1893 and lived with them and maintained the home during the remainder of their lives. In 1908 she established her home with her sister, Mrs. Beckman and subsequently lived there. Miss Lucia Fredericka Schroeder was born in Garnavillo, January 20, 1851. There she, too, grew to womanhood. She united in marriage with Henry C. Beckman, June 15, 1882. They located at Clayton, where they resided for two years. They came to Emmetsburg in 1884 and have resided here constantly since. Both of these ladies united with the German Lutheran church when they were children. Here they became affiliated with the Congregational church, and were faithful members always. They were both earnest, sincere, broad-minded Christians. The writer takes pride in the fact that these ladies were listed among our warm friends. Our parents had known each other and were close friends for years before either family came to Palo Alto county and this friendship was never broken. We knew these ladies personally and personally held them in highest regard. They were both true women through and through. There was no veneering about either of them. They were the same in church, at home, on the street or in society. They were kind and considerate. They were sympathetic and helpful. They were charitable in every act, word and deed. In the dominant traits of character, they were very much alike, yet the individuality of each was quite different from that of the other. Miss Schroeder, while a lovable, companionable woman, was quite retiring. She did not enter into community affairs. Physically she was frail, which probably caused her to refrain from social obligations which otherwise she might have enjoyed. Yet she was cheerful, and love a quiet visit with a friend. She was interested in social, civic and state affairs but did not participate much in their advancement. Mrs. Beckman was a literary woman, keen of mind, determined in character. She was a doer. She was a P. E. O. a charter member of the W. R. C. and one of the best and most active members. She was intensely patriotic in times of war and peace, was ever in the front ranks of leadership when there was anything to be done. She helped to organize the Emmetsburg Woman’s Civic Improvement Association and was one of its most active members. She helped also to organize the Evergreen Cemetery Association and no one did more than she to promote the work of improving and keeping beautiful this cemetery. She was a leader in most of the public work that was undertaken by the ladies of Emmetsburg and her counsel in these affairs was always good. Notwithstanding the obligations of church, society, public improvement and patriotic service, which she took upon herself, there was not a more perfectly arranged or better kept home anywhere than was hers. It was always inviting and the air of hospitality about this home, and the manner of reception given when on entered it, made it decidedly one of the most popular havens for friends, that we have ever known. Miss Schroeder was a most lovable and beloved daughter and sister. Kind, true, sympathetic, and helpful. Mrs. Beckman was all of this, and too, a devoted, faithful, loving wife. Friends were numbered by the acquaintances of both of these ladies. The general feeling is that two good, true, noble women have been called away. Two useful lives have severed their relationship here. They will ever be remembered by their host of friends in the spirit of utmost kindliness. The most profound sympathy of all goes out to Mr. Beckman, whose bereavement is greatest. Words are impotent to express the sorrow that has come to him. If true, good, earnest friends could help him, his burden would soon be raised, but all that we can do is to commend him to the Great Creator who never fails those who trust in Him. Mrs. Beckman and Miss Schroeder are survived by three brothers, B.F., C.J., W.R. Schroeder, and one sister, Mrs. John Beckman, all of this city. To them as well as to the other relatives the Tribune extends sincere sympathy. The relatives who came here to attend the funeral of Mrs. Beckman and Miss Schroeder were Mr. and Mrs. Realto Stratemeyer and daughter Wilma, Mr. and Mrs. Homer Stratemeyer and daughter Elizabeth, nieces and nephew, of Carroll, Iowa; Chris Beckman, (brother of Henry Beckman) and son Harry Beckman of Des Moines; Mrs. Herman Beckman, Miss Gretchen Beckman and Dr. Rowitt of Des Moines; Mrs. And Mrs. Ted Hoskins of Nevada, Iowa, and Miss Anna M.
