The operation was successfully performed and for several days there was every encouragement to believe that Mr. Reese would encounter. On Thursday, however, his condition became once more alarming and his strength gradually grew less until death claimed him. Deceased was born in Lendhorst, Shamburg Lippe, Germany, May 28, 1824, and at an early age united with the Lutheran Church, remaining in that faith until his death. In 1850 he emigrated to America, making his home for a time in and near Chicago. He joined the gold seekers in the journey across the plains to California in 1852, arriving at Sacramento after six months on the road. He spent a year in California mining and prospecting. but met with little success and sailed for New York by way of South America, stopping at Panama and other points. In 1858 he came west in search of a home. Arriving at Council Bluffs he walked over the prairies as far east as Adams County. He bought 200 acres of land in Mercer Township at $1.25 per acre, which tract is now owned by H. O. Reese, Jr. Shortly after this he returned to Cook County, Illinois and worked for a time by the month. October 24, 1858, he was married to Alice Sophia Linneman and brought his wife to this county soon afterwords. Their first house was a little log cabin of one room, about 20 X 24 in size, which served as parlor, bedroom, and kitchen. By hard work and careful management and a faith in the future of this country, Mr. Reese and his thrifty wife added to the homestead of nearly half a century ago until they owned more than 4,300 acres in Adams County. Probably none of this land is worth less than $45 an acre and the average would be over $50. Mr. Reese had considerable other property as well and his total possessions would reach toward half a million. Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Reese, six of whom are living. Two sons died when quite young. The surviving children are Henry Reese, Jr. of Prescott, Fred O. Reese of Mercer Township, Mrs. Minnie S. Flemming of Grant Township, Lewis C. Reese of Prescott Township, Mrs. Anna S. Russell Corning, and John C. Reese, who still resides with his mother. One brother and one sister survive him. The former lives in Germany. The sister and all the members of Mr. Reese's family were at his bedside when the peaceful end came. Henry Reese was an affectionate husband and a kind and indulgent father. He was an unobtrusive man who attended to his business at all times and who was a valuable and highly esteemed member of the community. The funeral services were held at the U. B. Church in Stringtown, Sunday noon, the services conducted by Rev. Mr. McNabb. The remains were interred in the Stringtown Cemetery. The family has sympathy of many friends in its bereavement. He brought an Omaha surgeon to his home a week ago on a specially chartered train in the hopes that an operation would save his life, but all efforts to this end was futile.
