Reese, former Villisca City manager and a prominent resident of this city, dropped dead at 5:30 p.m. Monday in the basement of the Corning Opera House where he had been supervising repair work. Mr. Reese, who owned the opera house had engaged Amos Bulen of Villisca to install a new furnace in the building and the two men went to Corning Monday morning to do some preliminary work which Mr. Reese had been supervising during the day. At the time of the tragedy occurred, MR. Reese and Mr. Bulen were alone in the basement of the building. Mr. Reese suddenly slumped to the floor and was dead within a few seconds. When Mr. Bulen saw MR. Reese fall he rushed to his side and called the other men upstairs to summon aid.A Corning doctor arrived within 5 minutes but Mr. Reese’s body was lifeless then. News of the sudden death reached the Villisca shortly before 6 p.m. and was received as a shock to friends and relatives here since Mr. Reese had not been ill, although members of his immediate family had known that he had a wee heart. He had appeared to be excellent health all day Monday and had converged with Mr. Bulen about the work in the opera house only a few seconds before he died. Mr. Reese had been a resident of Villisca fro the last 13 years and had been prominent in civic and church circles here. He served as city manager for two terms from 1924 to 1928 and also served as a member of the city council prior to that time. Following his death, his body was taken to a funeral home in Corning and was brought to Villisca, Tuesday morning. Funeral services were held here at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in Mr. Rees’s home on Third Avenue, with Rev. Arthur Mortenson, pastor of the local Presbyterian Church, in charge. Singing was by R. J. Swanson, H. H. Nordyke, Max Nordyke, and F. L. Means. Burial was made in the Villisca Cemetery. The pall bearers were S. A. Mathews, R. J. Swanson, J. C. Whitehill, H. H. Nordyke, R. L. Maxey, and Geo. Farquhar. Fredrick Charles , son of John Henry and Sophia Linneman Reese was born in Adams County, Iowa, May 4, 1863. He was 70 years old. After attending the rural schools he completed a course in business college in Shenandoah, Iowa. He taught a rural school for one year in Lincoln Township, Adams County, Iowa. On February 9, 1888 he was married to Lois E. Collman and to this union were bon seven children. They are Dora W. Reese, Grand Rapids, Michigan; Mrs. M. J. Stewart and Mrs. Ray Chadwick, Prescott, Iowa; Mrs. M. B. Latimer, Corning,; Charles A. Reese, Red Oak; Francis R. Teese, Clarinda, and MRs. Donald Strickler, Villisca. In 1888 MR. and MRs. Reese established their home in Mercer Township, Adams County, living on the farm until 1900 when they moved to Corning where they lived for 18 years. In 1920, they moved to Villisca and have resided here continuously since. then. In both Corning and Villisca, Mr. Reese was active in business circles and in public affairs. All his life he was active in church affairs. For 19 years he served as treasurer of the Congregational Church in Corning. After moving to Villisca he and his wife transferred their membership to the Presbyterian Church here where he served on the board of trustees. At the time of his death he was acting as president of the board. He is survived by his wife, all his children, and 6 grandchildren. Two grandchildren preceded him in death. He also leaves three brothers and two sisters who are Henry C. Reese, Ames, Iowa,; Lewis C. Reese, Creston, Iowa; John C. Reese and Rms. Hugh Fleming, Corning, and Ralph Russell, Omaha.
