Description	:	H. C. Hicks, long time resident of Emerson, passed away at his home here Monday. The body was removed to the Comer Funeral Home where it lay in state until the hour of the service on Wednesday, July 16, at Baptist Church. Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. C. H. Shanklin, assisted by Rev. C. H. Boos, with interment in the Emerson Cemetery. Read More	H. C. Hicks, long time resident of Emerson, passed away at his home here Monday. The body was removed to the Comer Funeral Home where it lay in state until the hour of the service on Wednesday, July 16, at Baptist Church. Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. C. H. Shanklin, assisted by Rev. C. H. Boos, with interment in the Emerson Cemetery. Two beautiful musical numbers were given by Robert Huntsman and Frederick Larson with Mrs. Robert Honeyman at the piano. A large number of Masons attended in a body with several coming from neighboring towns. The impressive burial service was given by Frank Oglevie by special request of the deceased. Casket bearers were Charley Hall, Merwin Viner, Jim Hicks, Charley Vestal, Darwin Hascall, and Harvle Douglas. Honorary pall bearers, members of the Nishna Masonic Circle were C. R. Brewer, Malvern, Gail Burgoin, Silver City, H. P. Anderson, Glenwood, C. C. Garber, Randolph; R. L. Carr, Emerson; and Lucius M. Perkins, Tabor. Henry Clinton Hicks was born near Parkersburg, Putnam County, Indiana June 13, 1859. When a small boy he moved with his parents to Madison County, Iowa making the trip in a covered wagon. He grew to manhood in this community. He was married at Fairbury, Nebraska November 5, 1882 to Kate Jones of Winterset. They established a home near Fairbury where they resided for 10 years. After a four year period in Keith County, Nebraska, they moved to Emerson, where they lived almost 51 years in the same house. To this union four children were born, Vernon, Ray, Pearle Wilkins of Emerson, and Wesley Hicks of Dixon, Illinois. Also survived besides his widow are two granddaughters and three great-grandchildren. He also leaves one brother, J. W. Hicks and one sister, Mrs. G. A. Hamley, both of Steele City, Nebraska, besides many nephews and nieces. He became affiliated with the Masonic Lodge January 27, 1910 and soon became an active and earnest worker in the order. He studied diligently and passed the required examinations to become the first district lecturer of Mills County, June 9, 1944. Until sickness prevented he never missed a meeting of his home lodge and worked untiring among the lodges of this section of the state. His presence at Grand Lodge will be greatly missed as he was a familiar figure among the participants for 17 straight years. He was also a member of the Easter Star and Modern Woodmen. "Dad" Hicks was a friend to everybody and always ready to aid his community in any way possible. He was elected mayor of the city for two or three terms and served as councilman at different times. Words are useless to express the many kind acts of a good citizen but the 50 years of service will remain a living memorial among his countless friends. Malvern Leader, July 24, 1947, page 3
