Lee Vernon Hicks, son of Henry Clinton and Kate Jones Hicks was born August 9, 1885 in Fairbury, Nebraska and passed away at the Murphy Memorial Hospital in Red Oak, Iowa, June 21, 1949, at the age of 63 years, 10 months, and 12 days. At the age of 12, he with his parents moved to Emerson, Iowa where he has resided since. He attended the Emerson Public School and later engaged in the Carpenter Business with his father. He continued this profession until his death. On August 4, 1910 he was married to Miss Inez Oglevie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Oglevie, and established their home in Emerson. He took much pride in his home and its surroundings and was never happierthan when his friends and loved ones could share his generous hospitality. Vern was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Order of Eastern Star. He figured prominently in both organizations having been a Master of the Lodge and Worthy Patron of the Eastern Star. He served his community for the betterment of conditions. His advice was much valued by those who sought it. He was inclined to be frank and sincere, but firm in his conviction for the right. He will always be remembered for the rich comradship and the fine service he wrought through the years. Words are inadequate in expressing the tribute which should be paid to this splendid character. His views, his principles, his loyalty, his unselfish efforts, and his great devotion have made for him a place which can never be filled in the hearts of his family and his fellow citizens. His father, H. C. Hicks preceded him in death on July 14, 1947. Those left to mourn his passing are his wife; his mother, Mrs. Kate Hicks; two brothers, Ray of Emerson and Wesley of Dixon, Nebraska, one sister, Mrs. Lyle Wilkins also of Emerson; other relatives and a host of friends.
