Mason, deputy sheriff and later sheriff of Boone Co for 4 years, from Boone Co Dem 31 May 1912 Boone County Democrat May 31, 1912 Boone Iowa Leonard Cross received a message Saturday morning announcing the death of his father-in-law, H.C. DeFore, which occurred early that morning at the family home in Los Angeles, California. The message stated that the remains would be brought to Boone for interment and would arrive here late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning. The funeral party arrived here about 2:00 o’clock yesterday morning and the remains were taken to the Welin undertaking parlors. Late Thursday morning they were taken to the Champlin Memorial Masonic Temple, where they were viewed by his countless hosts of friends here. The funeral services were held at 3:00 o’clock Thursday afternoon in charge of the Masonic Lodge, burial in East Linwood cemetery. DeFore were held Thursday afternoon and attended by a host of sorrowing relatives and friends. The remains lay in state in the Champlin Memorial Temple from 10:00 to 12:00 o’clock and were viewed by a countless friends of the deceased. The services were held at the temple at 1:00 o’clock in charge of the Masonic Fraternity, of which he was a devoted and esteemed member. The Rev. George Heaps, an intimate friend of the deceased, conducted the services and preached a most eloquent sermon. The musical numbers were given by a quartette composed of Miss Retta Noland, Mrs. T.E. Nelson, Mr. Harry Weaver and Mr. Milo Slade. They were: “Nearer My God to Thee”, “Abide With Me” and “What a Friend We Have in Jesus.” The remains were taken from the temple and turned over to the Woodmen of the World, who escorted them to the cemetery at Mineral Ridge and conducted their ritualistic services there. The floral tributes were most beautiful and plentiful, attesting the general esteem in which he was held. The pall bearers were J.W. Keigley, John Birmingham, Isaac Blackmore, Henry Schroeder, Simon Kemmerer and J.N. Ross, and members of the W.O.W. Henry Corwin DeFore was born in Boone county in 1853, his parents being Willis L., and Rachel C. DeFore. The father was born in Indiana in 1826. In 1849 he came to Iowa and settled in Polk county and for a time engaged in splitting rails. Later he returned to Clay county, Indiana, and there married Miss Rachel C. Friedley. In 1851 he again returned with his family to Boone county, and this time settled on a farm in Dodge township where he engaged in farming and stock raising and was engaged in this business until his death, which occurred November 7, 1867, at the age of 62 years. In the family were ten children, Julia, wife of Robert Royster, Edwin deceased, Henry C. of this sketch, Chas. A., who died in 1877, James A., of Tacoma, Washington, Mary S., wife of Aaron Nelson of Boone, Isabella, wife of Daniel Neff of Tacoma, Washington, Arminta, wife of Max Brooks, of Modesto, California, Daniel, who died in infancy and Viola, wife of Elmer Cramblett. On the 11th of March, 1873 Henry C. DeFore was united in marriage with Mary A. Barnes of Boone, whose parents were also natives of Indiana, but came to Boone county in an early day and the father was for several years engaged in the grocery business in Boonsboro. To Mr. and Mrs. DeFore were born four children, Nellie E., who died at the age of fifteen years, Charles R, and Clara May, twins, the latter deceased, and Fannie I., now wife of L.R. Cross of this city. The remaining son, Charles R., resides in Los Angeles, California. Mr. DeFore received his education in the common schools and spent one year in the Boonsboro city schools. After his marriage he spent several years on his father’s farm until 1887, when he removed to Boone and for two years purchased grain for the McFarland Grain Company. He then spent two years at the carpenter trade and for the same period was in the employ of the Northwestern. In 1898 he was appointed deputy sheriff of Boone county under S>P. Zenor and in 1895 was elected to the office of county sheriff, which he efficiently filled for four years. After leaving office he engaged successfully in real estate business for a number of years until his health failed so he could not keep up the business. For some time he had been suffering from a complication of troubles and about a year and a half ago he and his wife removed from Boone to Los Angeles, California, and made their home with their son, Charles. He appeared to grow better and for a time engaged in real estate business there, but later the old malady retuned and he gradually grew weaker until the end came. The children and relatives shave the earnest sympathy of a host of friends in their sorrow.
