His death had been expected for some time, and was only a relief from intense suffering. About two years ago (possibly less than that time), a small sore made its appearance on his face, under the right eye. At first it was thought insignificant, but before long his friends became alarmed, for it proved to be a cancer, and that too of the worst type. It is needless to detail at length his struggles with the dread disease, to which he succumbed at last. His sufferings were terrible, but he was patient to the end. W. L. Defore was born in Clay county, Indiana, July 12, 1826. He was raised on a farm and given a common school education. He was not what could be called well educated, but a man of practical common sense, whose judgment was worth more than mere book learning. As early as 1849 he came to Iowa, but did not locate here at that time, owing to some difficulty in securing his land. Returning to Indiana he settled up his affairs there and came to Boone county in 1850. The next year he settled on his farm in Dodge township, where he has continuously resided since. The Defore place consists of a full section of land and is one of the finest in the county. When the war broke out he answered his country's call for volunteers, going out with Company D. 32d Iowa, in 1862, and serving his full term He was married in 1848 to Rachael C. Friedley, of his old home in Indiana, and ten children blessed their union. Several have died in the years gone by but we believe six or seven are still alive to mourn his loss. Until taken ill with the terrible disease that carried him off, Mr. Defore was an active and influential politician. Originally a republican, he left that party in 1874, when he was elected to the legislature on the anti-monopoly ticket, representing this county with credit to himself and constituents in the Fourteenth general assembly. Two years later he was nominated for the senate, carrying Boone county by a small majority in the face of 500 republican majority, but being defeated in Story county. He was a leading member of the greenback party and has acted with that organization since its inception. Personally he was esteemed by all, his integrity above suspicion and his private life beyond reproach. The confidence of his neighbors he enjoyed to an unusual extent. The funeral services are to be held today (Wednesday) from the Baptist church in Mineral Ridge, the deceased having affiliated with that church many years ago. Excalibar Commandery, Knight Templars, of Boone, to which Mr. Defore belonged, will attend in a body. The remains are to be interred in Linwood cemetery in this city.
