In 1876 Henry left his Iowa home to travel and work in Nevad, Arizona, California and other western states. He was employed as a rach hand, miner, teamster, construction labor and Railroad fireman as a young man. When he lived at Humboldt House in Nevada he met and married Harriet Arnold. In the 1880's he was in Nevada probably because of his uncel, George Meacham. George was a 49er who went to Nevada in the 1860's to mine for gold in Humboldt Canyon Nevada. In those times Humboldt House was a Hotel and a stop over for the Southern Pacific Railroad. Later in his life George Meacham was referred to as "The Grand Old Man of the West". The State of Nevada he is listed in all the history books. In 1888 George and other ranchers lost all their cattle in the blizzard of 1888. James H. Strobridw married Laura Ida Meacham, daughter of George Meacham, James was the adopted son of James Strobridge, the chief superintendent working for Charles Crocker building the Southern Pacific Railroad. Starting at Sacramento the Pacifc Railroad would leave and head East to meet the Union Pacific Railroad coming west from Omah. THE BIG FOUR written by Oscar Lewis, is a story of the building of the Central Pacific Railroad, J.H. Strobridge is pictrued as a domineering foreman type. Henry Day Byram's first son, Roy, was born in Nevada in 1882. Henry fetched a doctor by renting a train from Rento to attend the birth. Henry became a fireman in 1883 for the Central Pacific Railroad. He had a accident and quit the railroad and they moved to Decatur, Nebraska. Henry owned and operated a general store in Decatur. He was in partnership with his Dr. W. S. Stephenson and his brother George. There was only three times that Henry left Decatur, Nebraska. The first time was to ranch in Hall Co., Nebraska and then twice when he was a senator at Lincoln in 1896 to 1896 and again in 1906 to 1907. He served for many years as a member of the Decatur school board. He also was the town Mayor for several years. Henry's OBITUARY continues to state that "His home attest the development of a fine sprit of refinement and culture. Henry donated generlously of his wealth to every worthy cause.
