Within a few hours of that same dinner hour, Mr. Douglas had answered the summons of the death angel and that almost of in the midst of his beloved ones on a festal day. Henry Douglas was one of the splendid citizens of Mills County. He was widely known over the east side of Mills County. His acquaintanceship came from his long residence on his farm and which he conducted with skill and carefulness. He was no lime light farmer, but one that combined physical and mental farming a successful business. Until a few years ago Henry Douglas lived on his substantial farm, acquired by work in past years, south of Emerson. On that farm his children worked and grew to manhood and womanhood and in that home some of them went forth to make homes for themselves. Mr. Douglas had always a spirit of fairness in dealing with questions that affected his community and himself and family. The editor of the Tribune along with scores of others is happy in the thought that we could call him "friend." Some months ago Mr. Douglas was warned that his heart was affected so that he needed to be careful. He had been driving his own auto but of late had given up the practice. His sudden death from heart trouble came as a shock to the family gathered at home, but to such a man death, even if sudden he'd no terrors. December 29, 1921, page 1 Funeral services for Henry Douglas were held from the Methodist Church in Emerson, Wednesday afternoon, December 28, at two o'clock. Rev. H. P. Morgan the pastor, conducting the service. A special choir, Ray Fields, Cameron Scott, Mrs. Merritt Taylor, and Miss Hazel Adams Sang. The church was filled to overflowing with sorrowing friends and relatives come to pay their respects to the man they honored. The floral offerings were profuse. The pall bearers were old friends of the deceased, Messrs C. D. Greenwood, Randoph Salmons, Will McMullin, W. J. Vance, Able Clites, and Chas. Lang. The remains were laid to rest in the beautiful Emerson Cemetery. The Masonic lodge under direction of Will Crawford had charge of the services at the cemetery using the beautiful ritual of the order. Henry Douglas was born near Stirling, Canada, January 4, 1844 and departed this life very suddenly at his home in Emerson, December 25, 1921 aged 77 years, 11 months, and 21 days. In the year of 1868 he moved to Illinois where for two years he worked as a blacksmith. He was married November 5, 1870 at Kirkwood, Illinois to Mary J. Chisholm and to this happy union were born 10 children, two of whom preceded the father in death. Henry Douglas came to Mills county, Iowa in 1871 and settled on the virgin prairie in Deer Creek Township where he built his home about five miles south west of Emerson. Here with his good wife for a number of years he engaged in farming . It was through long hours of patient struggle, toil, and self denial in those earlier days when the luxuries and modern conveniences of today where not known that this good man and his faithful companion reared their family. God along knows the many times the hearts were lonely and the bodies weary, but regardless of the hours of discouragement and seeming failure, they pushed ahead in their chosen work, and today admire them for their example thrift and industry. In the fall of 1908 they left the old home place and moved to Emerson where they have since resided. In 1912 Mr. Douglas converted and united with the Methodist Episcopal Church of the community in which faith he lived and died. We shall miss him from the Sunday evening services as he was seldom absent. He was elected to membership and raised to the sublime degree of a Master Mason in the Masonic Lodge in 1895. He was a devoted member of the Fraternity, active in all work, attending every duty and faithful to every obligation imposed on him. He was a good neighbor, a true husband, ad a loving father. He was a great lover of home and was never happier than when he had his family about him. It was in this spirit of utter joy and supreme happiness, with his loved ones about him that he passed from the shores of time to his eternal rest. He leaves to mourn his departure his wife and children: Mrs. Charles Vestal, Mrs. Harry Dunlap, Mrs. Lyle Bellwood, Mrs. Hamer Smith, George W., Thomas F., Ora E., and Harvey A. Douglas all of Emerson; a brother, George Douglas, eighteen grandchildren, besides many neighbors and friends. Why will you call it "Death's Dark Night?"
