Claude was born in Adams, LaSalle, Illinois to Henry G. Claude and Mary T. Marshall. In the 1850 Census, his father is listed as Gustav Gload but as you follow the family through the 1860,1870, and 1880 Census material, you find the name is Claude. His father Henry G. Claude probably went by Gustav Claude because there was another Henry Claude in the community. In the first census, Julian Claude who also lives in Woolstock is living in the same household with Henry and his family. Henry E. Claude was born in Illinois so the family came from France some time before 1845. Emily Claude married Henry Claude on October 31, 1868 in LaSalle County. He was the son of Henry G.and Mary T. Claude. He states this on a later Iowa Marriage license. They have one son named Charles Edward Claude in 1872. In later records, he uses Edward Charles Claude. Emily and Henry live in Adams, Illinois in the 1870 census with Henry's parents. In the 1880 Census, Henry's mother, Mary T. Marshall Claude is living with them. His father Henry G. Claude died and was buried in Saint John's Lutheran Cemetery in Somonauk, Illinois. His brother Lewis is also buried there. They must have moved to Iowa by 1884 because Mary is buried in the French Cemetery in Woolstock, Iowa on November 12, 1884. In 1885 Iowa census, they are near Woolstock, Iowa and are living next door to Emily's parents Julian and Julia Claude. Henry marries Josephine Kepler from Woolstock around 1886. Henry will live to be 90. This marriage certificate to Josephine confirms his parents as Henry G. and Mary Marshall Claude. Emily will marry several times and is buried in the Troy Cemetery near their son Edward C. Claude. Her grave reads Emily Croghan. In the census records, Henry's birth year would seem to be 1846. His wife Emily S. Claude was a sister to Jane Claude Beshey.
