Schaper was born in Brunnenswick, Germany, February 16, 1865 and died at his home near Mason City, May 28, 1927, aged 62 years, 3 months and 12 days. He came with his parents from Germany and located with them at Dewitt, Saline County, Nebraska in the year 1881. In the year 1887 he came to Custer County and homesteaded near Mason City. He was united in marriage with Louise A. Trobee, December 24th, 1889. They made their home on the homestead until 1903 when in failing health, he moved with his family to Mason City and entered the mercantile business in which he continued until 1916. Then he moved back to the homestead and lived there until his death. He is survived by his wife and eight children, namely William C. of Broken Bow, Mrs. Minnie Brown of Denver, Mrs. Ona Chipps, Henry A., Arthur O., Mrs. Myra Cooper, Alden C. and Valeria R., all of Mason City and eight grandchildren. Mr. Schaper belonged to that diminishing company of pioneers who came from the countries of northern Europe to the middle west and contributed their sturdy traits of character, their thrift, industry and intelligence to the making of communities and states. Though laid aside with illness, for the past year he retained his alert intelligence to the end. He was reared in the Lutheran faith in Germany and for the past twenty years was a member of the Mason City Baptist Church. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon with Pastor R. J. Wynne in charge and interment was in the Mason City Cemetery."
