He left this earthly world on September 13, 2007 at the Community Memorial Hospital in Burke, South Dakota at the age of 91 years. As a young adult, Henry joined the Civilian Conservation Corp. He worked on the building of the Orman Dam near Belle Fourche, South Dakota. He traveled around South Dakota shocking corn by hand and working sugar beets in western Nebraska. In 1940, his military number was the first drawn for Gregory County's World War II Army draft. From 1941 to 1945 he served in the South Pacific Islands and in Australia. After his service duty, he returned to his farm south of Burke. On November 2, 1946, he was united in marriage to Elsie Willuweit. He and Elsie were lifelong members of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Jamison, Nebraska. On the farm south of Burke they raised six children. Henry was active in promoting the advancement of electrical progress in Gregory County. He served on the Rosebud Electric Cooperative as a board member. Along with farming, Henry worked for the Soil Conservation Service. He was a 60 year member of the VFW and American Legion. He enjoyed bowling, fishing and motorcycle riding. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife of 60 years, Elsie of Burke, SD; their five children, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his brother, Howard Kortmeyer of Andover, MN; his sister, Dorothy Hanlon of Loveland, CO and several nieces, nephews and friends. Henry was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters, two brothers, and a son-in-law, Jerry McKnight. Henry is now with his daughter, Connie, who preceded him to heaven on November 24, 1970. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, September 16, 2007 at 3:00 PM at Clausen Funeral Home in Burke. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery, Burke. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the church.
