The Belleville Telescope 13 September, 1907: H.L. Brightop, a prominent and well to do citizen of Hollis committed suicide Saturday morning by hanging himself to a rafter in his smokehouse. The deceased had been living alone on his farm about a half mile north of Hollis since the death of his wife two years ago. Nothing out of the ordinary had been noticeable in his actions, although grief over the death of his wife is supposed to be the cause of his rash death. He was found at seven o'clock in the morning by his son, John, who had gone to his father's house to help with some work on the farm. Mr. Brightop was 60 years old and had been a resident of Cloud County for the past thirty-five years. He leaves two children, John Brightop Jr. and Mrs. J.A. Wheeland. The funeral services were held from the home Sunday afternoon at three o'clock. Concordia Daily Kansan reported, in part, Mr. Brightop was born in Janesville, Ohio, some sixty years ago, and has been a resident of Cloud County for many years. Thirty-five years ago he married Alice Cochran, who died some two years ago. Three children were born to them, John Brightop, Jr.; and Mrs. J.H. Wheeland; and a son died in infancy. Mr. Brightop was of a taciturn turn of mind and generally quite morose. He is reputed to have been worth $25,000. An article in the local Concordia newspaper dated September 7, 1907, reads as follows: DOINGS OF A DAY - Those who went from this city to Hollis, yesterday, to attend the funeral of Lewis Brightop, say it was one of the largest gatherings of the kind ever seen on a similar occasion at Hollis. Over a hundred teams were in the procession from the home to the cemetery. The services were held at the late home of the deceased and were conducted by Dr. Brushnell, assisted by Rev. E. Price. The ceremonies at the grave were conducted by the Masonic lodge of this city - Mr. E. V. D. Brown filling the station of Master, and Mr. H. W. Barber performing the duties of the chaplain. About twenty members of the Masonic lodge of this city attended the funeral. (Contributor: John C Vander Meulen)
