Alice Cochran was born in Vandalia, Illinois, May 25, 1857. She migrated from Illinois to Missouri with her parents in 1871, where she was married to H.L. Brightop. After about four years the family moved to their now pleasant home, which was then bare prairie, near which the little village of Hollis was since located. Mrs. Brightop leaves a loving husband, father and mother, two children, Mrs. Nora Wheeland of Hollis and John Brightop of Wayne; two grandchildren and other relatives as well as friends innumerable to mourn her. None knew her but to love her. She was always happy, ever looking on the bright side of life, she had a kind word for everyone. She was always a dear friend to the school children, having lived so close to the school house, bringing her in almost daily contact with them. It is noble to act well your part, what e'er your lot may be and this she certainly did as those who knew her best in her most excellent home life and in her care of the sick and unfortunate can abundantly testify. The funeral service was conducted at the M.E. Church at Hollis, February 15, 1906, at eleven o'clock by Rev. Bushnell of Concordia, assisted by the Presbyterian choir. His text was taken from Job 16-22, "When a few years are come, then I shall go the way whence I shall not return" after which the remains were laid to rest, amid a large concourse of friends in the Hollis Cemetery. *****John C Vander Meulen (#49326193), a descendant of Washington and Sarah Ann (Hines) Cochran, has an old family document indicating that Surilla Alice Cochran married Henry Brightop on May 10, 1874, by Rev. George W. Meek.
