Description	:	Henry Lewis Kinning, a verified descendent of Mayflower pilgrim Edward Doty, was born 17 February 1864 in Preparation, Iowa, the second child to Henry J. Kinning Sr and Lucretia Lewis. Henry Jr never met his father as Henry Sr left for the Civil War before his birth and never returned, dying when Henry Jr was only 7 months old. Henry Jr never met his father as Henry Sr left for the Civil War before his birth and never returned, dying when Henry Jr was only 7 months old. Lucretia was still submitting proof of her children’s parentage when she married Winfield Mattocks/Mattox 9 months after Henry Sr’s death in 1864. Lucretia left Winfield after several months of marriage and married John B. Mulkins by 1866/67 and lived in Nebraska City, Nebraska. By 1870, the family was living in Timber Hill, Kansas with a new stepsister, Chloe. Those were extremely difficult years for Helen and Henry Kinning who suffered at the hands of their step-father and the neglect of their mother. John. B Mulkins abused Helen and was sent to prison in 1876. Lucretia used the Civil War minor child support funds designated for Helen and Henry to pay for Mulkin’s lawyers and ongoing appeals to have him released from prison. The neglect became so bad that Henry, at the age of 14, applied to the War Department to have the funds sent to him vs his mother By 1880, Henry was 16 years old, Helen was married and had left the area, and Mulkins was released from prison to rejoin the family. Henry Jr married Effie Freeman, daughter of Andrew J. Freeman and Elizabeth Ann Strong, on 22 November 1885 in Bourbon, Kansas when he was 21 years old. Their first daughter, Nellie died the day she was born in 1886. Son Montie, born 1887 died at the age of 3 years. Their next 4 children, Henry Guy (1892), Lula (1895), and twins William and Wilmer (1901) all survived childhood. Effie died in 1907 at the age of 38 and left Henry Jr with four children to raise. Prior to Effie’s death, the family moved to Decatur, Nebraska to be close to her parents who helped Henry Jr after Effie’s death.
