Believed to be the third white boy born in this area, he had lived in the community longer than any other person. He had been ill about six weeks. Henry Mathias Mecke was born Feb. 6, 1873 in a dugout west of Creighton on the homestead of his parents, William Sr. and Katherina Mecke. It is now know as the Herman Wagner farm, west of the Lundberg Bros. farm. He saw the beginning of the present city of Creighton, including the first building, now occupied by Falter's Booterie. He lived on the place of his birth until about 26 years of age. He then moved to the present Andrew and Joseph Mecke farm, where he made his home for 65 years. In addition to farming, he operated threshing machines in the neighborhood for many years. Mr. Mecke was one of the three first babies to be baptized in the Catholic faith in this community. It was on Aug. 31, 1873, that he, along with Fred Schneider and Helen (Lena) Wagner were baptized. As a boy he attended mass in private homes before the church was built. His first home was that of Frank Schneider, where Elmer Wheeler now lives. Mr. Mecke was 15 and attending school, when the noted blizzard of 1888 struck. His father went to the school to take the children home and Henry led the team of horses along the fence line to prevent getting lost. The morning after the storm he recalled seeing a cow belonging to Matt Wagner Sr. atop a 20 foot snowdrift on the Mecke homestead in the timber claim. Mr. Mecke married Emilia K. Wagner at St. Ludger Church on Feb. 12, 1901. Three children were born to them, Andrew and Joseph and Mrs. Andrew (Lucy) Meyer of Winnetoon, all of whom survive, along with six granddaughters, 21 great grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Fred (Lena) Solmon. Mr. Mecke was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus and Catholic Knights of America. Preceding him in death were his parents, wife, two brothers, Andrew, age 8, and William and three sisters, Mrs. August (Mary) Horstman, Mrs. R.Y.
