Description	:	Mr. William Mecke Sr. died at the family home in Creighton, Wednesday, December 5th, after an acute attack of erysipelas of a week's duration. Although being afflicted for sometime no immediate dangerous results were anticipated until this week and his death followed shortly. Read More	Mr. William Mecke Sr. died at the family home in Creighton, Wednesday, December 5th, after an acute attack of erysipelas of a week's duration. Although being afflicted for sometime no immediate dangerous results were anticipated until this week and his death followed shortly. William Mecke Sr. was born in Troegen, Hanover, Germany, December 3, 1841, having lived but 2 days beyond his 76 years of life. He came from Germany arriving in Illinois in 1869, residing there but a short time, when he moved to West Point, Nebr., where he lived two years. In 1872 on April 9, he was married to Catherine Faber. Together they moved to Knox County, living on a homestead until 1903, when they removed into Creighton, where they have since lived. Mr. Mecke is survived by one brother, Henry Mecke Sr., two sons, Henry and Will of Creighton and three daughters, Mrs. August Horstman and Mrs. B.Y. Thompson of Creighton and Mrs. Fred Salmon of Concord, Nebr. Two children, a daughter and a son died in infancy. Funeral services will be held Friday at 10 o'clock from the German Lutheran Church in Creighton, Rev. John Keiser officiating clergyman. Interment will be made in the family plot in St. Ludgerus Cemetery. The passing of Mr. Mecke closes the career of another of our sturdy pioneers, who helped to make our community what it is today. He was one of the practical steady and steadfast farmers, who stayed through every vicissitude of pioneer life and whose earthly reward was adequate sufficiency for his sustenance as well as that of his family, but more and greater than this his reward consisted in the true respect in which he was held by his fellowmen. He was of a quiet and unassuming manner and carried his word as one of honor. His respectful memory lives on. The sorrowful relatives have the sympathy of hosts of friends in their sad hour of bereavement. ...The Creighton News 6 Dec 1917 1900 census states the Mecke's had 7 children, five living. Henry M.-27, William F.-26, Carrie-14 and Helena-11 are living in the household.
