Read More	Henry was the son of Jacob Mattes and Luzia Mayer. He married Agnes Kurtzhals on Jan 28, 1908. March 2, 1911 - Carroll Times - At his home in this city early Sunday morning, February 26, occurred the death of Henry Mattes after an illness of about seven weeks. He was operated upon for appendicitis about five years ago, and at times he had trouble resulting from the operation and he had been treating for this several times up to the time of his death, which was caused by a general weakness of his system due to the recurrence of the trouble a year ago. On January 5th this year he moved to Carroll, being unable to work the farm, and in the hopes that if he could take things easier he would stand a better chance for recovery, but the grim reaper ruled otherwise. Henry Mattes was born in Roselle township, January 30, 1885, and was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Mattes of this city. All of his life had been spent in Roselle township and he grew to sturdy young manhood on the farm. On January 28, 1908, he was united in marriage to Miss Agnes Kurtzhals and they farmed in Roselle township until he was forced to leave the farm because illness. He leaves to mourn his death, besides his wife, his parents and three brothers and five sisters, all of whom are residing in Carroll county and in this vicinity. His death comes as a blow to his many neighbors and friends in this vicinity and in Roselle township. In all of the years that he had lived here he had always been found an industrious, straight forward and honest young man, one whose very sturdiness indicated that had he lived he would have made a success in life. He was a good, kind neighbor, a sympathizing and helping friend to all and a good manager of affairs in general. He was one of the kind of men who are the back bone of a community, who are ever willing to sacrifice labor and time to further the interests of the community in which they live and his death is indeed a loss, not only to the sorrowing relatives, but to the community in general. The funeral services were held from SS. Peter and Paul's church Tuesday morning at 9:30. Solemn requiem mass was read by Rev. Father Wessling. A large number of sorrowing friends attended to pay their last sad respects to this excellent young man, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery. Card of thanks — We desire to thank the many kind friends, who aided us during the illness of our beloved husband and son and who after his death by word and deed made our sorrow easier to bear.
