May 31, 1923 - Carroll Times - Jacob Mattes, one of the prosperous land owners of Carroll county, died at the St. Anthony hospital Friday morning at 4:40 o'clock after suffering a stroke of paralysis the Sunday before. He entered the hospital Tuesday to take treatments for an ailment of some standing and was getting along nicely when he was smitten with paralysis. From then on until his death he had but short intervals of consciousness, but was able to converse with his family to some extent. Jacob Mattes, was born in Ingendorf, Kr Kitburg, Regsbyzk Trier, Germany, April 30, 1840. He came to America in 1871, going directly Mendota, Illinois. Two years later he returned to Germany where he was married February 13, 1873, to Miss Lucey Meyer. Mr. and Mrs. Mattes had the pleasure of celebrating their golden wedding anniversary in February of this year. Mr. and Mrs. Mattes established their first home in Mendota but the following year in 1874, moved to Carroll county, locating on the farm in Roselle township which Mr. Mattes owned at the time of his death. Mr. and Mrs. Mattes moved to Carroll 20 years ago and have since lived at their present location, corner of Adams and First streets. Some 40 years ago through an accident with a corn sheller Mr. Mattes lost one of his hands. Undaunted by misfortune, he continued with his farm work and through his own efforts became a prosperous land owner. Mr. Mattes was a lover of nature and had a special liking for flowers. Since leaving Germany he felt a longing to cultivate a bed of German roses and a number of years ago had some of the bushes imported. The garden which was carefully cared for by him has delighted many people during the summer months. Mr. Mattes liked to travel and since his marriage made three trips to Germany to visit relatives. On one trip he was accompanied by his wife and their two younger daughters. Of the 10 children born to Mr. and Mrs. Mattes, two are dead. One daughter died in infancy and Frank Mattes died February 26, 1911. The children who with their mother survive are: Steve Mattes, Carroll; Matt Mattes, Iowa City; Mrs. J.J. Klocke, Carroll; Mrs. G.M. Schumacher, Parkston, S.D.; John Mattes, Carroll; Mrs. Will Siepker, Carroll, and Misses Lena and Lucey Mattes, Carroll. He is also survived by a brother, Matt Mattes, of Dedham, two half brothers, two half sisters and a step-mother living in Germany. Funeral services were held Monday morning at 9 o'clock at the Sts. Peter and Paul's church. The requiem high mass was sung. Mr. Mattes was a member of the Holy Name society of the Sts. Peter and Paul's church and this organization attended in a body. The pall bearers were Joe Smith, Dave Rettenmaier, Lambert Baumhover, Martin Casey, Henry Millenacker, and Herman Gehling. Out-of-town relatives and friends who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Matt Mattes and daughter of Iowa City; Mrs. G.M. Schumacher, Leonard and Mary, of Parkston S.D.; Mr. and Mrs. Matt Mattes, of Dedham; Mr. and and Mrs. Frank Tigges, John Tigges, of Dedham; Steve Loew and family, Maple River; Mr. and Mrs. Nick Loew, Mr. and Mrs. Matt Loew, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Loew, of Mt. Carmel.
