Description	:	Henry Smith, Jr., age 93, of Aplington, Iowa, was born October 4, 1915, in Windom, Minnesota the son of Henry Smith, Sr. and Thursa (Croot) Smith. When Henry was five years old he moved with his family to a farm just east of Aplington. He received his education from a rural country school near his home. Read More	Henry Smith, Jr., age 93, of Aplington, Iowa, was born October 4, 1915, in Windom, Minnesota the son of Henry Smith, Sr. and Thursa (Croot) Smith. When Henry was five years old he moved with his family to a farm just east of Aplington. He received his education from a rural country school near his home. Henry grew up with three brothers, Jim, Ed and Raymond, and one sister, Marion. Henry Smith Jr. and Minnie Kuper were married November 25, 1936, in Waterloo, Iowa. They lived in the Austinville area for several years where they worked for farmers before moving to their home in Aplington. After working six years for the Illinois Central Railroad, Henry started to work at Rath Packing Company. Henry worked at Rath's for 30 years, primarily on the 3:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. shift. For many years he would help Louie Ontjes on the farm in the morning before heading to Waterloo. Henry retired from Rath's in 1977. Henry and Minnie had a trailer at Harpers Ferry for many years and enjoyed spending time there fishing. They also spent many hours in their garden. Henry's goal was always to have the potatoes in by Good Friday. Henry enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family on the weekends. Henry's wife of 67 years, Minnie, passed away February 23, 2004. Henry faithfully took care of her for years as her health slowly declined. After Minnie's death, Henry moved to Maple Manor. Henry was a member of the First Reformed Church in Aplington and enjoyed all the services at Maple Manor. He liked taking part in all of the activities while at Maple Manor. Henry died Saturday, July 11, 2009, at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa, of natural causes. He was preceded in death by his wife, Minnie; his parents; one sister, Marion Frey; and three brothers, Jim, Ed and Raymond. Henry is survived by three children, Norma Warren of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Gary (Nancy) Smith of Bella Vista, Arkansas and Deb (Harris) Holm of Cedar Falls, Iowa; five grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren. Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at the First Reformed Church with burial in the Pleasant View Cemetery both Aplington. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel in Aplington, (319)347-6275, and one hour before services at the church.
