He had been in robust health, and no one dreamed of his nearness to this great and mysterious beyond, and his sudden and unexpected death was a sad shock to his family and many old friends in Auburn. Henry Stone was born in Trenton, Franklin County, Indiana, January 15, 1829. In 1852 he left his home to try his fortune in the west and located in Illinoistown in Placer County, subsequently moving to Sacramento. In 1855 he came to Auburn where he has since resided. He conducted a blacksmith shop here for a long number of years and became one of the most thriving and prosperous businessmen in Auburn. In 1865 he was married to Florence A. Slade and from this union sprang seven children, all of whom are living. In 1838 he was the recipient of the nomination for Coroner and Public Administrator by the Republican Party, and he was elected by a handsome majority. This was the only political office he ever sought or held, and since then he has preferred the quiet life of a private citizen, although he always took an active interest in politics and was regarded as one of the leading Republicans of this county. He retired from business about 10 years ago after having accumulated considerable property here and in other parts of the state. Henry Stone was one of the landmarks of Auburn, a good citizen, and an upright gentleman whose presence will be sadly missed as the deepening shadows fall upon the old settlers whose narrowing circles speak all too plainly as to the result a few years more will bring to all of them. Mr. Stone was a fond and devoted husband and a kind and indulgent father, and his death leaves a vacant chair in the home and an aching void in the hearts of his wife and children. He was a member of the Chosen Friends, holding a life insurance policy in that organization for $2000. He leaves a wife and seven children, namely Mrs. L. H. Gray, Mrs. E. T. Robie, Miss Gertie Stone, Howard, Ellsworth, Chester, and a little girl five years of age. [Placer Herald, Auburn, Saturday, 12-26-1896 No choice for Trenton on Find A Grave. .
