Herbert O Stone was born in Massena NY July 23? 18 (12)63 ?? when but a young man came to Cass co Iowa in 1882 where he purchased a farm in Lincoln township. In 1905 he retired with his family and moved to Anita where he continued to live until his death. Mr Stone was educated in the schools of Massena and Lawrenceville NY and taught several terms of school in his native state, also in Lincoln township this county. He was united in marriage to Ella E Myers on Oct 21 1886. To this union was born seven children. They are Mrs Ethel Woodard of Des Moines; John and Bernard Stone of Berkeley CA; Gerald Stone and Mrs Frances Reed of San Francisco CA; Harold Stone of Oakland CA and Mrs Wilma Dostal of Santa Monica CA. Mrs Stone passed away in 1917 and in 1919 he was united in marriage to Mrs Flora Valley Ramsey. Mr Stone was always active in religious fraternal and community affairs. While on the farm in Lincoln townshiip he was an active member of the Baptist church, and when he moved to Anita became active in the congregational church, uniting with the same in 1919 and was an officer in that church until his death being one of the deacons. His heart and interest was always in the welfare of the church and Christian ideals. He was a member of Obedience Lodge, No 380 Af & AM. he was raised a Master Mason June 30 1908, was a charter member of the Royal Arch Masons of Anita, as well as a member of the Order of Eastern Star. In these orders he held many important offices and was a loyal and worthy brother of the highest order. In the passing of Mr Stone, a Christian citizen, an honored and worthy brother has gone from us and will be greatly missed by all in this community. Mr and Mrs Stone made a trip to CA during the holidays where they visited their children. This was indeed a rare treat for them and the children, as that was the last visit he was to enjoy with them while living, a visit he greatly enjoyed as he loved his children and grandchildren greatly. And they will remember their father as they saw him with them out there during the Christmas holidays, a beautiful memory to carry with them through life. Mr Stone has reared a splendid family, one that he had reason to be proud of, and justly so, for he wanted his family to have the best of everything. Although Mr Stone had been in failing health for some time, his sudden passing came as a shock to many of us. My personal acquaintance with Brother Stone since my coming to Anita has been a most pleasant one, and I shall greatly miss his wise counsel and inspiration as deacon of the church, and a Christian gentleman. He leaves to mourn in passing his faithful and loyal wife; the seven children; brother A B Stone of Anita; sister Miss Aldula Stone of Anita; eight grandchildren, nephews, nieces and other relatives besides a host of friends. As Brother Stone's pastor for more than six years, I can testify to his sterling Christian qualities an ideals. The church has lost one of their most useful citizens, and the fraternities of a most worthy brother. But his work and life will live after him. Music for the services Monday was furnished by Guy Rasmussen and Mrs Raymond Lantz. Masonic services were given at the grave in Evergreen Cemetery. Pallbearers were G A Rope, Dr F D Weimer, M M Burkhart, S G Jewett, A R Kohl and E S Holton.
