Herbert was born on July 22, 1930, to Edward Julius and Ottilie Sophia (Kuschel) Neils in Courtland, Minnesota. He was the second youngest of the couple's nine children and grew up in south-central Minnesota, where he received his education and enjoyed outdoor activities like hunting and fishing. In 1952, at the age of 22, Herb enlisted in the U.S. Army and served his country during the Korean War. Sent to Korea to be a cook, he worked as a truck driver during much of his deployment. Herbert married Priscilla Mae Lindmeyer in Watertown, South Dakota, on May 12, 1950, beginning a wonderful marriage that would last for 65 years. The couple had three son and the Neils brothers had a devoted, hard-working father who loved to visit with family and friends, watch the Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Gophers football games, take his family on fishing vacations to the lakes of northern Minnesota and play dominos, billiards, and cards. For years, Herbert and Priscilla were members of a card club that met once a month at various homes, where they played euchre and enjoyed the company of good friends. After receiving his honorable discharge, Herbert worked at the Northwest Coop feed plant in the Twin Cities which later became Midland Feeds, and in 1967, he accepted an offer to become the manager at Midland's plant in New Hampton. He remained with the company, which became Land O'Lakes until he retired in the late 1980s. In retirement, Herbert and Priscilla enjoyed becoming snowbirds of sorts as they often visited their eldest son in Union City, California, enjoying many trips to the casinos to do a little gambling, see the shows, and enjoy the buffets. Herbert was also a movie buff with a preference toward comedies and war movies, especially those based on true stories. Herbert was a phenomenal grandpa to his two grandsons, Connor and Logan, who knew their biggest fan at their youth and school activities was always their grandfather. He was a member of the American Legion and, being the son of an ordained Lutheran minister, both his membership and time spent with the members of Trinity Lutheran Church in New Hampton meant a great deal to him. Herbert lived a long and productive life, one in which he experienced both highs and lows yet throughout he always remained a loving and caring spouse, parent, grandparent, and friend. Those that knew him best will dearly miss him, but they also know that today he is reunited with his wife and his son in a far better place.
