Mills and L. C. Osincup. Herman Moehling, the oldest of three children, was born on a farm near Tripoli, Iowa, on May 20, 1876, son of C. H. and Sophia Moehling. At the age of five he moved with his parents to Tripoli, where received his elementary and high school education. As a child he became affiliated with the Evangelical church, of which he was a member until his death. After his college work at Waterloo, he was associated with his father in the general mercantile business at Tripoli. In 1903 he came to Waverly, where he was deputy county treasurer for two years and later was elected county treasurer for two years. From 1908 up to three years ago he served as assistant cashier of the State Bank of Waverly. He resigned form this position in September, 1936, because of ill health. Mr. Moehling was united in marriage with Prudence Brassington of Madison, Wis., on Nov. 1, 1905. Surviving are the widow, four daughters: Mrs. W. R. Holmes of Waverly, Mrs. M. J. Hillman, Wellington, Texas: Mrs. R. C. Herrmann, Chicago, Ill.; and Mrs. J. V. Stout of Waterloo, Ia.; four grandchildren, Arden and Eugene HOLMES, Judith Herrmann and Kay Stout, and one sister, Mrs. A. G. Kampmeier of Chicago, Ill. Herman E. Moehling, a worthy native son and esteemed citizen of Bremer county, has made a commendable and creditable record as assistant cashier of the State Bank of Waverly. His birth occurred in Dayton township this county, on the 20th of May 1876, his parents being Christopher and Sophia (Ohlendorf) Moehling, the former a native of the province of Hesse, Germany, and the latter of Page county, Illinois. Christopher Moehling, who was a lad of six years when brought by his parents to the United States, followed farming in early manhood and subsequently embarked in the implement business at Tripoli, Bremer county, Iowa. Later he turned his attention to general mercantile pursuits at that place and was thus successfully identified with business interests until about 1909. During the past four years he has lived retired at Tripoi, enjoying the fruits of his former labor in well earned rest. Both Mr. and Mrs. Moehling are well known and highly esteemed throughout the community as people of genuine personal worth and upright, honorable lives. Herman E. Moehling, the oldest of three children born to his parents, attended the high school at Tripoli and also pursued a commercial course at Waterloo, Iowa. After putting aside his text-books, he entered the general mercantile establishment of his father at Tripoli, serving first as a clerk and later acquiring an interest in the business. In January, 1903, he disposed of his share in the enterprise and came to Waverly, here acting as deputy county treasurer for four years. On the expiration of that period, he was elected treasurer and ably served in that capacity for two years. Retiring from public office, he accepted the position of assistant cashier in the State Bank of Waverly and has since been thus identified with the institution, being widely recognized as one of its efficient, valuable and esteemed representatives. On the 7th of November, 1905, Mr. Moehling was united in marriage to Miss Prudence Brassington, who was born at Madison, Wisconsin, on the 7th of April, 1880 her parents being Frank and Lucinda (Shauers) Brassington, the former of English parentage and the latter a native of Pennsylvania. Frank Brassington early acquired land near Madison, Wisconsin, and there followed general agricultural pursuits throughout the remainder of his life. His widow still resides on the old homestead near Madison. Mrs. Moehling, who was one of a family of eleven children, is now the mother of four, namely: Gladys Ruth, Elva Erline, Della May and Ora Glee. Mr. Moehling is a democrat in his political views and, as shown above, has held the office of county treasurer and deputy, but had declined further political preferment. His religious faith is indicated by his membership in the Evangelical Lutheran church at Waverly, while fraternally he is identified with the Masons, belonging to Tyrrell Lodge, No. 176, A.F. & A.M., and Jethro Chapter, No 24, R.A.M. of Waverly. In the county where his entire life has been spent he enjoys an enviable reputation as a gentleman of unquestioned integrity, unfeigned cordiality and unfailing courtesy and is recognized as a citizen of worth and value.
