Read More	The subject of this sketch, Herman Groeling, was born August 27, 1848 in Pommerania Province, Germany and passed away at Long Beach, Calif., April 5, 1929 a the age of 80 years, 8 months and 8 days, heart failure being the cause of his demise. At the age of four years, he came to this country with his parents and located in Wisconsin. Here he lived for four years and then they moved to Burlington, Iowa, where they made their home for eleven years, before moving to Page county, Iowa, where another four years was spent. In 1871, he came from Iowa to Knox county, Nebraska and took up his residence on a homestead in what is now the Walnut community. He lived here until four years ago, when he located at Long Beach, Calif. to spend his declining years in that salubrious climate. On September 25, 1873, he was married to Mary Louise Bosse, who proved a worthy helpmate for almost forty years, passing to her reward, February 24, 1920. To this union nine children were born, three of whom preceded their parents in death: Jesse Arthur, Birthold and Hilda. The surviving children are two sons, J. Louis and Herman G.,both of the Walnut community and four daughters, Mrs. J.F. Butterfield of Dorsey, Nebr.; Mrs. C.M Hobart of San Pedro, Calif.; Mrs. L.D. Forney of Hereford, S.D and Mrs. T.E. Tikalsky of Walnut, Nebr.; 22 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. Early in life he was confirmed in the Lutheran church and remained a staunch and steadfast follower of that faith, until the time of his demise. Mr. Groeling was one of the pioneers of the Walnut community and was the one, who secured and named the Walnut Post Office. He was a prominent and successful stockman and farmer and took an active part in the upbuilding and development of that part of the county. He death takes from the world another of those dauntless souls, who left the comforts and conveniences of the settled communities to build the homes and develop the resources if the virgin soil of the west that their descendants might enjoy the fruits of their labors. The remains were brought back from California and funeral services were held at the Walnut Ev. Church on Wednesday, April 11, conducted by Rev. Schlect of Orchard and were attended by a host of relatives and sympathizing friends. The floral tributes testified in their mute way to the high esteem in which he was held by all who knew him. In 1925 he was married to Mrs. Christina Wagner of Long Beach, Calif., who is left to mourn his passing.
