The end had been presaged for some weeks. All the loving hands and hearts could do for him was done for him and he passed away in the midst of every possible care and comfort.  The deceased was born in Grosz Herzogtum, Oldenburg, Germany, March 6, 1833. He was married to Miss Anna Witte in February of 1856 and in 1870 came to America with his family and settled on a farm just across the line in Dodge County. Here he toiled early and late for 22 years, increasing his possessions and broadening his acres, until 1892 when he took up his residence in this city. His wife died in 1828 and several years later he took unto himself a new wife in the person of Mrs. Gesiene Hollman.  Born to his first marriage were six daughters and one son, three of whom, Mrs. John Stanvers of Scribner, Margaret of Santa Anna, and Herman of Uehling, survive. There were children by his second marriage. He is also survived by his wife and four stepsons, W.F. Hollman of this city, Fritz of Wishner, John of Bismarck township and Henry of Bonner, Oklahoma.  Mr. VonEssen was a man of wonderful vitality and strength. In his earlier years he followed the sea and hard and tough were some of his experiences before the mast. His was life of hard work, of simple, rugged honesty and unfailing integrity. He was a man of broad mind, good judgment and of great loyalty to his friends. His promises always meant performances no matter at what cost. A somewhat gruff exterior covered a kindly heart and a genial humorous disposition. His sturdy upright character will long be remembered and appreciated.  Services from the home to the Evangelical Association church at 1:30 this afternoon. Rev. Wichelt officiating. Interment in Mt. Hope Cemetery. The Republican offers condolences.
