Sadly, his mother died of cholera on 25 September 1854 in Quincy, Illinois. His father then married Hanna Henriette Florentine Hallerberg. Herman had a total of 13 brothers and sisters, and 5 half siblings. Herman married Anna Munderloh and together they had a total of 3 children. After Anna's death in 1880, Herman married Johanna Wilhelmine Schrepel. They had 6 children. Johanna died 3 March 1891. Herman was married the third time to Anna Marie Louise Vieselmeier from Boerninghausen, Westphalia, Prussia, Germany. At some point she began using the name Louise ("Lizzie"). Hilgenkamp, one of Washington county's prosperous farmers, died at the General Hospital Sunday afternoon at 5:30 o'clock where he had been for treatment for the past week. Mr. Hilgenkamp had been a sufferer for several weeks and last Wednesday he underwent an operation. He gradually grew worse until the end. Cancer of the stomach was the cause of his death. Mr. Hilgenkamp was a native of Germany and was 63 years of age. He came to America with his parents when but a child. They settled at Quincy, Ill., in 1852. Ten years later they came to Arlington where he has since made his home. He was married at Arlington in 1876. Death has once more invaded this vicinity and taken from our midst another pioneer resident -H. Hilgenkamp, whose sudden death occurred at a Fremont hospital early Monday evening, following an operation for cancer of the stomach. The body was brought to Arlington Tuesday, and was laid to rest in the German Lutheran cemetery, north of town, Wednesday afternoon, after funeral services at the house at 1 o'clock, and at the church at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. H. Hallerberg. Mr. Hilgenkamp had been ailing for a number of years, from stomach trouble, the presence of a cancer not being known until recently. Last week he was taken to the Fremont hospital where an operation was attempted, but was postponed, when the condition of the stomach indicated that no benefit would follow. He gradually grew worse until death came to his relief Monday night. Herman H. Hilgenkamp was born in Germany in 1850, and would have been 63 years old had he lived until next December. He came to this country with his parents, when an infant, they going direct to Quincy, IlI.. where the family resided for a while before coming to Washington county, in the early '80s, where he has since resided, respected by all who knew him. He leaves a wife and children, two brothers and three sisters---Mrs. Wm. Stork, Mrs. Carl Vogt. Mrs. Emma Gisselman, and Peter and John F. Hilgenkamp, all of whom are residents of this county, two brothers-William and Henry having passed to the great beyond during the past four years. The deceased was well known to all the older residents of Washington county.
