Herman moved with his parents to western Nebraska when he was 1 year old. At age 12, he accepted Christ as his personal Savior after attending evangelistic meetings. Regier, 79 November 7, 1926 ~ July 30, 2006 Herman was born on Nov. 7, 1926, in Henderson, Neb., to P.A. and Marie (Huebert) Regier. Herman moved with his parents to western Nebraska when he was 1 year old. At age 12, he accepted Christ as his personal Savior after attending evangelistic meetings. He attended Madrid, Nebraska schools and spent his senior year at Freeman Academy in Freeman, S.D. In 1947, Herman joined the United Nations Relief cattle boat to help relieve the starving people in China. Likewise, throughout his lifetime, he served in various capacities with Mennonite Disaster Service, Mennonite Central Committee, Red Cross and Lions Club helping and serving in whatever way he could relieve suffering. In 1950, Herman married Sarah Boehr in Henderson and they were blessed with five children and 56 years of marriage. They spent meaningful years traveling and attending family events. Texas was their winter home for eight years where they again were active in the local church and activities. Herman was self-employed as a farmer all his life. He was a pioneer in developing self-propelled irrigation. Most of his children farmed with him at one time or another. Recently, he was excited to be a part of the ethanol plant near Madrid. Herman was a member of the General Conference First Mennonite Church in Madrid and the Mennonite Brethren Church in Grant, NE. In 1992, they moved to North Newton, KS, where they joined Koerner Heights Mennonite Brethren Church. Three years ago, Herman made a life adjustment when his physical condition deteriorated. Many hours on dialysis replaced his busy active life. He became acutely ill Friday and was taken to Via Christi - St. Francis hospital in Wichita, Kansas. On Saturday, as family gathered around his bedside, he was able to speak and bless each one. He passed away peacefully Sunday, July 30, 2006 at the hospital, surrounded by his family and pastor singing and praying. Left to cherish his memory are sons, Leon Regier and wife Marilyn of Grant, Dale Regier and wife Teresa from Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada, and Larry Regier and wife Kristi of Independence Mo; daughters, Marilyn King and husband Craig of Hesston, KS and Karen Deaver and husband Terry of Augusta,KS; grandson Aaron Regier and wife Tammy of Edmond, Okla., and great-grandchildren Alyssa, Micah and Anna; grandson Matthew Regier and wife Joanna from Lenexa, KS and great-granddaughter Megan; grandson Andrew Regier and wife Carolyn from Lenexa; grandson Lucas Regier and wife Rachel of Hillsboro, KS; grandson Chris King and wife Raquel of Springdale, Ark., and great-grandson Caleb; grandson Marcus King and wife Allison of Overland Park, KS; grandson Michael King of Chicago, IL; granddaughter Carlin Buhrman and husband Blake of Littleton, CO; grandson Jonathan Regier of Hillsboro; grandson Jordan Regier of Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada; granddaughter Ashleigh Regier of Independence, Mo., and great granddaughters ShaeLynne and Makaylee; granddaughter Kylie Regier of Warner Robins, GA; granddaughter Karissa Regier of Independence, Mo.; granddaughter Alisha Regier of Independence, Mo.; grandson Austin Regier of Independence, Mo.; grandson Ben Deaver and wife Maris of Manhattan; grandson Abe Deaver and wife Ashley of Manhattan,KS; granddaughter Emily Deaver of Augusta, KS; grandson Daniel Deaver of Augusta; brother Pete Regier and wife Rachel of Madrid, NE; sister Marian Doerksen Brundage of Camp Verde, AZ; sister Ruth Preheim and husband Curt of Freeman, SD; and brother Ivan Regier and wife Ann of Madrid, NE He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Carl. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. August 1, 2006, with family greeting friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Petersen Funeral Home Chapel. Service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Koerner Heights Church of the Mennonite Brethren with Pastor Mark Issac officiating. Graveside service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Madrid Cemetery in Madrid. The family requests that memorials in his name be given to Koerner Heights Church of the Mennonite Brethren and Tabor College. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Herman and Sarah farmed many years in the Grant, NE, area and were well known for their hospitality both near and far. They were very active in Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS) and their church. Below is a biography written by Herman: I spent my senior year at our Church School, Freemen Jr. Academey, Freeman, South Dakota. After completing high school I returned to Madrid, Nebraska, to farm. We have never been able to get out of debt since. None the less it has been a good life for us. In 1955 we began changing from dryland to irrigation. Our crops were corn, pinto beans, and popcorn. In 1947 through the Mennonite Central Committee, I had the privilege of helping transport cattle to China on the SS Boulder Victory Ship. I married Sarah Boehr, Henderson, Nebraska, on April 10, 1950. We have five children, Leon, Marilyn, Dale, Larry, and Karen. They have given us eighteen grandchildren. Sarah, a registered nurse, nursed at the Grant, Nebraska, hospital. I served in Mennonite Disaster Services projects as director. I was chairman of the Mennonite Central Committee sale for several years. At age forty-two I learned to fly. Accumulated over 3,000 hours flying in my Cherokee 180. Outstanding trips we have taken are: 1975, Europe including Russia to trace our roots; 1982, toured the refugee camps in Somalia and Sudan following the delivery of Mennonite Central Committee Corn there. In August 1992, Sarah convinced me to move her to North Newton, Kansas, where she has retired and is letting me live there with her.
