The children whose lives were lost were Hester Gebbers, twelve-year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gebbers, and Connie Wheeler, aged 12 and William Wheeler, aged 10, children of Mr. and Mrs. F. C. Wheeler of Spokane. The Wheeler children were spending part of the vacation at the Gebbers home and were soon to be joined by their father and mother who were coming to the Methow on an outing trip. How the fire started is unknown. On account of the heat of the day the Gebbers family did not retire until late. Hester and the Wheeler children had the upper story to themselves. The other members of the family occupied a porch down stairs. The first known of the fire by Mr. and Mrs. Gebbers was when they were aroused by heat and smoke which suddenly swept through a doorway and around a corner of the building and enveloped them. Seizing their two youngest children out of a bed nearby, Mr. and Mrs. Gebbers broke through the porch screen to the ground. Already the entire house above and below, was in flames. A portion of the roof at the farther end was falling. They ran around the building, calling for the other children, and stumbled upon the body of the little girl, Connie who somehow had got to the upper window and jumped. No response came from the others who were above. In all probability they had been overcome by the smoke and were unconscious before fire reached them. It was impossible to enter the lower floor or reach the upper portion, as the walls were caving in. Very soon after Mr. and Mrs. Gebbers were aroused, Marion Rose arrived. He is the only neighbor who lives near on that side of the Methow. Marion saw the light at about 12 o'clock midnight. He ran the quarter of a mile, but was too late to do more than give aid to the family. Marion immediately crossed the Methow on the swinging bridge and came to John Larrabee's, who drove to town with him to summon other aid. A call was at once sent to Mr. Wheeler at Spokane. He was reached at 2 o'clock and left wth Mrs. Wheeler to Pateros immediately. Druggist Evertsbusch started for the Gebber's ranch and Dr. McKinley was summoned from Brewster. Meantime Mr. Gebbers carried the little girl to the cable bridge and was crossing in the cage when Marion and Mr. Larrabee returned. They carried the child to the automobile and brought her to town where everything possible was done to relieve any pain. She was conscious and spoke to those about her bravely and cheerfully, but at about 6 o'clock this morning passed away. At the hour when the Reporter goes to press the bodies of the two children left in the building have not been reached, but sympathizing friends are there to do all that can be done. This tragic affair has cast sorrow over the community. We can at this writing say no more than express the sympathy of the people for the bereaved parents here and in Spokane. - Pateros Reporter of July 4th Issue, 1924.
