His parents were born in Plymouth County, MA, but after their marriage, they moved to North Haven, Knox, ME. According to the US census records for 1830, 1840, and 1850, and his gravestone, his surname was Ames. Although his ancestors used Eames, his father didn't use the "E," and neither did he. According to the Family Search site, he married Elizabeth "Betsy" Fowler on 5 Mar 1812, probably in North Haven. Betsy died in 1825, and no records have been found for children from this marriage. According to the Family Search site, he married Sarah "Sally" Scofield on 5 May 1826 in Vinalhaven, Knox, ME. The family farm was on North Haven island, and North Haven was considered part of Vinalhaven until 1850, so the marriage occurred in North Haven. He was a farmer. They had the following children: Mark Dyer Ames (1827-1896); Rebecca C. Ames (1828-1900); Amanda W. Ames (1830-1889); Abigail M. Ames (1832-1888); Nathan Philbrook Ames (1834-1918); Rowena M. Ames (1837-1920); Elizabeth Fowler Ames (1840-1928); Priscilla C. Ames (1842-1919); John H. Ames (1844-1873); Benjamin Ames (1846-1911); and Abram Ames (1848-1875). The original version of this record placed his death as 4 Dec 1859. However, according to the probate hearing, held in Waldo County (now Knox County) on 22 Mar 1859, he must have died on 4 Dec 1858, assuming that the 4 Dec part is legible on the gravestone.
