Karns, is one of the most extensive farmers in this part of the county, and has further distinction of being one of the founders and promoters of the town of Englevale. He has been in the county since 1880. Mr. Karns was born in Bedford County, PA Aug. 9, 1849. He was the son of John H. and Rachel (Hixson) Karns. Both parents passed all their life in the state of Pennsylvania and his father died in 1895 and his mother in 1897. They are both buried in Pennsylavnia. He purchased 160 acres near the west line of Lincoln township and his estate soon grew to 800 acres. in 1891 he engaged in the lumber, grain, and hardware business in partnership with L. H. Lashley. He sold out the mercantile interest in 1892 and returned to the farm. In 1902 he opened a coal shaft on his place, and on Aug. 17, 1903, leased it to the Pittsburg Coal Co., which operated it on a royalty basis. On March 1, 1903, he bought the David Dick place, and part of it he laid out in town lots, since which eleven new houses have erected on this addition to the town. Mr. Karns was a populist in politics, and served in the office of Justice of Peace. He and his family attended the Methodist Episcopal Church which was organized in 1894. (This church is being used as the Grange). On Aug. 4, 1870, Mr. Karns was married to Miss Mira Shaffer, a daughter of Esra and Sarah Shaffer of PA, Mr. and Mrs. Karns are the parents of the following children: Ida, wife of C.A. Strawalley, who was weight boss at the coal shaft; Scott, a farmer in Lincoln township; L. B., a partner in Pittsburg Coal Co., at Englevale and in the mercantile establishment; Harry, a general superintendent of Pittsburg Coal Co.; Jessie, Sada, Irwin, Pearl, Clarence and Hattie. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> His children were: Irvin Karns 1886-1958-married Myrtle Curry; Clarence Karns; Ida Agenes Karns 1871-1941 - m. to Alvin Curtis Stwalley Scott S. All Karns families buried in Englevale cemetery. John's son Hiram Hixson Karns and his family moved to Englevale, Kansas after her brother-in-law John R. and Mary Leach moved to Kansas in 1872.
