Sterling Died At The Age Of Eighty-One BURIED IN CRISFIELD CEMETERY WEDNESDAY Hiram L. Sterling, retired wholesale merchant, passed away on Sunday afternoon last at the McCready Memorial Hospital, where he had been a patient for several days. He was nearing his eighty-second birthday. With the passing of Mr. Sterling this community has lost another of its pioneer residents and one of its noblest citizens; one whose place in the social and business life of the city will be extremely difficult to fill. Born on November 19, 1858, he was the son of the late David Sterling and Mary Ann Horsey Sterling, both of respected Crisfield families. In his younger days Mr. Sterling followed the water and was active in the freighting of tropical fruits from the West Indies to Baltimore. In those days he was the mate on the "James E. Trott", which was owned and captained by the late Luther Sterling of this city. During this period of his life Mr. Sterling, proved, as he has often since, that he possessed a great deal of initiative and was highly dependable under all circumstances. On one occasion Captain Luther was ill and unable to make the long trip, giving the command of his ship over to young Hiram. Not only did Mr. Sterling make the trip successfully but established a new record in sailing time, a record that, according to report, was never beaten. Later in life he went into the retail grocery business with the late Joseph Poleyette and their store was located on the corner of Main and Second Streets where Goldsborough's Grocery is now located. This business was later dissolved and Mr. Sterling then clerked in various business establishments in the city including the firm of Horsey Brothers, which was located on the south side of Main street, at the corner of Ninth street, where the office of Chas D. Briddell, Inc. is now situated. Some thirty-five years ago he and his brother, the late Ernest Sterling, went into the wholesale business in an establishment which was located on the corner of Main and Eighth streets and which several years ago was almost completely destroyed by fire. Several years after its organization, his son, Herman L. Sterling, was taken into the business, which was then known as H. L. Sterling and Son. This firm went out of business when the fire did heavy damage to the building and merchandise in recent years, and then Mr. Sterling retired. Mr. Sterling was a noble character and was active in the social life of the community as well as in business. His congeniality and ready smile were familiar to everyone, young and old alike. He greeted everyone he met, whether intimate friend or stranger, with a cheery "hello" and a warm smile. Many years ago he wed the former Mrs. Emma Horsey, daughter of the late Isaac and Hettie Horsey, by whom he is survived. Also surviving are a son, Herman L. Sterling, two grandsons, Herman Sterling, Jr., of New York and Lawson Sterling, of this city, and a sister, Mrs. Ella Stevenson, of Marion. Largely attended funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon from the Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church with the pastor, Rev. Charles M. Elderdice, in charge. The many floral tributes further showed the esteem in which he was held by everyone. Pall-bearers were Rupert Catlin, Olin Sterling, Vernon Sterling, Clyde Covington, Adolphe Justice and Clifford Daugherty. Interment was in the Crisfield cemetery.
