At age 12, Homer tended the horses which were used for pulling Huff Brothers Grocery Delivery Wagons from the southwest corner of Maple St. and Falls Ave. By age 14, he was allowed to go from house to house and take orders — delivering the order later in the day. He soon went to work for Coates Brothers (Hiram and Luther), at their grocery located in the building where City Meat Market now is. As soon as he was old enough, he went to work at the bank. Eventually, he entered the furniture business with Simpson and Jones. A short time later, a partnership was established consisting of Homer Hoover, Byron Jones and Pliny Crumrine. Their furniture store was operated out of what is now the Rooster Tail Bar, 90 W. Market St. In 1910, Hoover, Jones and Crumrine exchanged buildings with the J. P Jones Furniture Store, moving to what is now the Sears, Roebuck and Company Building. The partnership expanded to include a drapery department, a large china and crystal department, appliances, Edison victrolas, floor coverings and a funeral business. Jones retired, but the Hoover-Crumrine partnership lasted until 1926. In 1926, Hoover purchased the residence of Dr. Lorin Smith on the northwest corner of Main and Huntihgtoh streets where he established the Hoover Funeral Home. This was the first time in Wabash County that a furneral business was operated from a home converted for this purpose instead of operating in conjunction with a furniture store. The remodeled funeral home remains at the same location and is now owned by Hoover's grandson and operates under the name of Hoover-Miner Chapels. Hoover, together with 9 other men, organized and opened the First National Bank in Wabash during the depression of the 1930's. Naturally, he was one of the first directors of the bank. Active socially as well as in business, he served as treasurer for the Wabash Presbyterian Church for many years and as deacon or elder of the church several times. Hoover was a charter member of the Wabash Kiwanis Club, belonged to the Wabash Elks Club, Hannah Lodge F & AM #61, all York Rite Bodies, and was a Patron of Eastern Star. He served on the school board at the time the present Wabash High School was planned and built. Homer had time to marry and raise a family. His wife, Catherine Marie {1883-1959) was the daughter of Mary (Pretorius) and John Baumbauer. Homer and Marie were parents of four children — Charles Edward {1908-1967), John Franklin (1910), Mary Rebecca (1911) and Julia Ann (1918).
