Surviving are his wife; three sons, David with the Air Force in Colorado Springs, Colo., and Mark and Dean at home; two daughters, Charlotte, University of Nebraska student, and Linda at home; two brothers, Raymond of Conway, Ia., and Donald of Silver Springs, Md.; and a sister, Mrs. Clara Bell Beale of Miami springs, Fla. The Nelson Gazette, Thursday, February 3, 1966 ============= Homer Smith, son of Hiram W. and Martha King Smith, was born near Nelson, Nebraska on August 22, 1912, and passed away suddenly at his home near Aurora on January 27, 1966 at the age of 53 years, five months and five days. He attended school in Nuckolls County and graduated from High School at Nelson. A short time after his graduation the family moved to Ericson. From Ericson he moved to York. Homer worked at the welder's trade and was very proficient in his work. On April 7, 1940 he was united in marriage to Arthea Rhoads at York. Five children were born to them. They made their home at Fairmont until 1943, when they moved to Harvard. On October 21, 1944 he was inducted into the Armed Services, serving with the Navy until his discharge on February 2, 1946. Upon his return from the service, they farmed north of Bradshaw until they purchased their present farm southwest of Aurora and on March 2, 1951 they moved to this location where they have since resided. Homer was a progressive farmer and very active in community affairs. He was a member of the First Christian Church. Also of Aurora Lodge No. 68 A.F. & A.M. of which he served as Master in 1965. He was a member of the Shekina Chapter No. 32 of the Royal Arch Masons and of the Knights Templar at York. He was a Past Commander of the Lester S. Harter Post No. 42 of the American Legion and was a member of the 40 & 8. He was a past director of the Hamilton County Livestock Feeders Association and had served as the first president of the Aurora Rural Fire District. During the school year of 1963-64, he and his wife and family shared their home with Johanna Morf, an exchange student from Switzerland who attended Aurora High School. He was preceded in death by his father on February 18, 1963 and one brother, Phillip, in 1934. Those who survive are his wife, Arthea; three sons, David, who is in the Air Force assigned to ENT Base at Colorado Springs, Colo., and Mark and Dean at home; two daughters, Charlotte who is a student at the University of Nebraska and Linda at home; his mother, Mrs. Martha Smith of Long Beach, Calif.; two brothers, Raymond of Conway, Iowa, and Donald of Silver Springs, Md.; one sister, Mrs. Clara Belle Beale of Miami Springs, Fla., and other relatives and many close friends.
