Graveside services were held this afternoon at 2:30 in the Pleasant View Cemetery located 7 miles north and a quarter east of Nelson. The casket bearers were Joe Ferebee, Joseph Ferebee, Arbor Ferebee, Frank Kenley, Wray Wehrman and Ernest Wroughton. Hiram Wates Smith was born Nov. 19, 1872 on a farm seven miles north of Nelson, Nebr., the son of David Wyler and Annabella Stokes Smith. His family had come from Indiana to Nebraska that spring. He saw, during his lifetime, the development of Nebraska from raw prairie to the land we have today. His life was spent in Nebraska except the last few years when he lived with his children and in a rest home. He was united in marriage to Martha King on June 1, 1910 at the home of his twin sister near Nelson. To this union were born four sons and one daughter. As a youth, he was a member of the Pleasant View United Brethren Church that was near his home, later he transferred his membership to the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Lincoln, Nebr. He passed away Febr. 18, 1963 at a rest home in Aurora, Nebr., at the age of 90 years, 2 months and 29 days. Burial was in the cemetery on the farm where he was born and raised, and which was deeded by his father as a community cemetery. He leaves to mourn his death, three sons, Raymond H. of Conway, Ia., Homer of Aurora and Donald D. of Silver Springs, Md.; one daughter, Mrs. Clarence A. (Clara Belle) Beale of Miami, Fla.; 18 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters, one being his twin, and a son, Phillip W.
