Eacrett, a life long resident of Mills county, passed away early Sunday morning at his home in Strahan following an illness of but a few days. He had been a resident of this county for more than fifty years. For the past two years he has been in failing health although he had been considerably better the past few months. Recently he suffered from an attack of the Flu that later developed into his last illness. Funderal services were held Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock from the Strahan M. E. chjurch and was largely attended for he was known far and near and numbered his friends by those who knew him. Masses of beautiful flowers also testified to the love and affection of relatives, friends, and societies. The services were conducted by Rev. H. M. Cooper, the pastor of the Methodist church.. A special choir, R. W. Criswell and Kenneth Shaw and Mrs. L. D. Fletcher and Mrs. L. A. Talbott sang. Burial was made in the Malvern cemetery. The pall bearers were W. M. Vestal, W. W. Wolfe, Frank Johnson, L. M. Hambach, Harold Peterson, and Frank Severns. The following obituary was given: Horace Fremont Eacrett, son of George Kingsland Eacrett and Elizabeth Steele Eacrett, was born June 4, 1856, near West Union, Fayette county, Iowa, and passed away at his home at Strahan, Iowa, April 1, 1928. His first home, a log house, in a clearing oak timber, was three whole days, round trip, from the nearest market place, McGregor's Landing, on the Mississippi River. He was given the name of Horace Fremont as his father was a great admirer of Horace Greeley, the famous editor of the New York Tribune, the mouthpiece of the North, opposing the opposition of what the South called their interests; also of John C. Fremont, "The Pathfinder." who was the first nominee of the Republican party for president in those strenuous days of 1856. All his early life was spent on the frontier; first on the farm in Fayette county, and later, in 1872 coming with his father to Mills county, and there helping to break the virgin soil in Deer Creek township. He was married on December 25, 1882 to Althea Bradley, and they moved to Antelope county, Nebr., but the chjange was from log cabin to sod house, so most of their life has been "Out where the West begins." They lived there eight years then came back to Iowa where they have since resided. Horace leaves his wife, Althea, one son, Areleigh, of Billings, Montana, and two daughters, Mrs. May Darland of Hastings and Mrs. Eleanor Lemonds of Strahan. These, with seven grandchildren, mourn the loss of a good husband a a kind father, together his his brothers and sisters--C. E. Eacrett and G. S. Eacrett of Malvern, Mrs. Lenore Wolfe of Glenwood, Mrs. Rachel Shay of Laurel, Montanas, and Mrs. Maude Burks of Winner, South Dakota. His numberous friends will sadly miss his friendly, genial greetings and his witty pleasantries that left no sting or hurt. Horace was a hard working farmer all his life. He was just and a man of integrity, on whom one could depend. His word was as good as his bond. Not Puritanical nor straight laced, but one whom his fellow men loved and were glad to know; no layer down of rules and formulas for other people to follow; never giving a stone when one asked for bread; trying ever to "render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's and unto God the things that are God's. Relying on Divine Providence, who doeth all things well and knowing that if he did his part, though he lived in log cabin or sod house, suffer grinding labor and hours of sore disappointment, he could look through the clouds in the spaces where the sun shone through, roll up his sleeves, chin up, nerves in tone, head clear, hope in his heart, his lips saying: "I shall win the Heavenly mansions that are prepared for those who love the Lord and do His will."
