Burks, a former well known resident of Malvern, who passed away Wednesday, March 11, following an operation. Mrs. Burks, whose home was in Sturgis, South Dakota underwent a very severe operation, March 9, in a hospital in Hot Springs, South Dakota, that at first seemed to be successful but later proved fatal. She was brought to Malvern, accompanied by the husband, daughter Mrs. Gayle Jackson and son William, and funeral services were held in the First Baptist church Sunday afternoon at 2:30, conducted by the pastor, Rev. L. R. Bobbit. It was largely attended, many relatives and old time friends from Glenwood, Strahan and Omaha being present. Beautiful flowers in great profusion attested to the love and affection of friends, relatives, and societies. A special choir, R. W. Criswell, Baton Tennant and Mrs. L. A. Talbott and Mrs. H. H. Amos with Miss Helen Jones as accompanist, sang. Interment was made in the Malvern cemetery. The pall bearers were old time frieds: Fred Durbin, C. E. Hilton, Geo. F. Salyers, Martin Cunningham, Charles Vestal, and W. P. Wortman. Florence Maude Burks was born Jan. 15, 1875 near Strahan. She was the daughter of G. K. and Elizabeth Eacrett and was the youngest of a family of ten children, four of whom are living. She was a successful teacher in the schools of Mills county for several years. On March 17, 1897 she was wedded to John H. Burks. To them were born three children: Mrs. Gayle Jackson of Sturgis, S. Dak. and George William of Rapid City, S. Dak. and Charles Russell who was killed in action at Sergy, France July 30, 1917.Mrs. Burks was a member of the Eastern Star, Silver Urn Chapter No. 168, uniting in 1915. In her youth she united with the Methodist church of Strahan where she was a member until the time of her death. She was also a member of the D. A. R. and was a "Gold Star Mother." Mrs. Burks underwent a very severe surgical operation at Hot Springs, S. Dak., March 9 and for a few hours seemed to be very cheerful and hopeful of her recovery; but very soon realized that she could not live long, and in a very brave and courageous way, which was one of her characteristics, spoke encouragingly to her husband and children of the future life and passed on to her reward as a Christian should. She was a very devoted mother and wife, a successful school teacher, and greatly loved and admired in the communities where she lived and exerted an unusual influence wherever she was known. A host of friends will miss her and mourn her departure as well as her many relatives and her immediate family. She is survived by the loving husband, daughter Gayle and son William, and two grandchildren;_Donald and Joan Jackson_ also two brothers, Charles and G. S. Eacrett of Malvern, and two sisters, Mrs. Alf. Wolfe, of Glenwood, and Mrs. M. H. Shay of Laurel, Mont. Those from out of town attending the funeral were: W. S.
